1/350 TOS E is happening.

Well, we are talking about two different things. I would not have the window arrangement the same on the port side of the secondary hull for the same reason I mentioned above. If I was making a model of the studio model I would not have windows on the port side of the secondary hull. A model of the 11 foot studio model is something I would like to do eventually. :)

I do not buy into the symmetric window argument due to the unlikely probability that on a real ship the internal arrangement would allow such an arrangement. To me it just makes it seem more real if the window patterns are random. To each his own.
 
I'll believe this is going to happen when I see it. I've had one done for five years and still have enough parts to make several kits. To bad some people got to do their best to stomp on someone elses work. BTW, how many times have they said they were going to
put this out? What took them so long? I've got some brand new parts coming in for mine soon, nice new laser cut details. Don't think I'll be buying this kit though, to expensive for a "Made in China" mass produced styrene kit. I'd rather work with AW Studios to finish up the kitbash kit parts.
 
Who cares if the windows are symmetrical or not? There's no correct way here. Personally, I would prefer them symmetrical since that's the way they would have appeared on TOS anytime a mirror image would be shown. But who cares? Who would notice and care? There are more important issues. Like is this thing going to be available and is it going to be of decent quality.

But in reality, I won't be getting this. There is no way I could ever match the build/paint quality of the MR Enterprise that I have.

Try it. You might surprise yourself. Besides, a few people are likely going to do their models as Pilot versions of the ship as a compliment to the MR model, which is a production version.

As for R2's announcement, technically they never said they were officially going to do one until last May. Prior to that it was a screwup that got a part number sent out to the distributors and before that while some were on record as saying they wanted to do a 1/350 TOS E, they never really had the capital to do it. I am pretty sure this is going to happen now as they have invested a pretty fair amount into a lot of things. The next major hurdle as I see it will be the first run test shot. By that point enough will have been spent that financially it will be better to move it to its conclusion and go ahead and issue the kit as opposed to cancelling it. I think it will happen.

Exactly! I hope there isn't another four part engineering hull, or a ten part primary hull.....:lol

If I recall correctly, Dave Metzner said that the TOS was going to be after the Refit, even though there was a vote on several of the forums. This was before R2 took over the PL franchise thingy from Johnny Lighting. This was back when Iverson still ran Hobby Talk. Since then I'm pretty sure that they have said they were going to put the TOS out twice before. I know I asked them in 09 at WF if they were actually going to do it then and they said they were and here it is going to 2012. Every time myself or anyone else starts making new parts and talking about putting out a kit, they come out of the wood work and announce that it's back on......????

I'm sure you're probably right that on an actual ship the internal layout would not be symmetrical hence the windows would probably not be symmetrical either. Still, in the absence of any other references, I think it wiser for R2 to make both sides symmetrical and leave it up to the modeller to fill in any windows they so choose to suit their own interpretation. That would be easier than having to drill and file out the windows to match if they supplied the port side as solid with no windows to match the studio model. In the best of all worlds they would supply two sets of parts giving us a choice on which version to build but we know that's not going to happen. :lol

Agreed on the symmetry issue, the only reason they didn't do it on the eleven foot model was to save time and get it ready for production.

Now, if you wanted a perfectly scaled replica of the shooting model.... Someone would have to restore it again, scan it and correct the wavy lower primary hull... LOL:lol

I don't really consider the old Polar Lights from before the Racing Champions buyout to be the same company. Only thing I heard firm back then from anybody was "Klingon" but considering that bit of information was primarily coming from Thomas Sasser, I consider it suspect anyway. I remember a couple personal conversations I had with Dave at Wonderfest during the year that the Refit came out and some possible ideas were mentioned, but nothing was firmed up in concrete at all. I suppose indeed there was a "plan" to do a 1/350 classic, but it was still never green lighted or fully announced.

The current Round 2 doesn't have many people left who were involved with Polar back then. Those old guard Polar Lights individuals including Dave Metzner went on to work for Moebius (aka Aurora version 3). So once Round 2 got access to the old molds from Polar and AMT, they had to essentially build up a relationship again with a company in China to make new stuff (and Chinese factories tend to turn over 1/3rd of their workforces every year when the Chinese New Year rolls around). Granted they managed to slam the 1/1000 refit out pretty quick, but it looks like they had all the CAD measurement data from the 1/350 kit and it was likely somewhat easy to pull off a project like that. Plus, scaling down a model tends to be easier than scaling a small model (1/1000 TOS E) into a large one.
 
Well, I just hope that if they do get it to market they make the neccsary corrections and get the details right, something between the production model and the CG Revised version, the fact that they are talking about putting the gridlines on makes me laugh, you can barely see them in a high-res screen grab on an eleven foot model, to put them in the mold of a 32.46" model......????

Looks like they are doing a GREAT job on this kit. Very thorough. There will always be areas open to interpretation...

I am glad they are using the MR E for some of their reference. I know it isn't perfect, but it is pretty darn good, accuracy-wise.

We spent 18 months working on the design for the E, and I had to constantly make "this or that" decisions. They aren't easy, because SOMEONE will always be ticked off at your choice. I tried to choose what I thought most of the fans would like. And now they have to do that all over again :)

I DEFINITELY don't agree with the grid lines being in the tooling, but I saw how many people wanted them on their blog, so C'Est La Vie...

I am DEFINITELY getting the kit, and building it as the second pilot model to go alongside my MR. A couple of years ago, I converted a damaged MR replica into a 2nd-Pilot model for a customer. I was surprised how many changes had to be made. I didn't realize how many differences there were until I had to analyze and DO them.

I didn't know about the "blue neck" thing until recently though...I will add that to my new build.

I am STOKED! Bring it ON!!!!

Well, you can't fix the rounded edge on the 1/1000 TOS that should be an angle with putty.

This was available to the public five years ago and the first set of masters only took two weeks to create. AW Studios is working on a kit-bash kit and I've helped with some of the detail and other developement so we'll see.

Steve, I will say you did a fantastic job on the MR Enterprise. I too am planning on building a second pilot version to sit next to the MR.

The MR E seems to be the standard by which all other Enterprise replicas are judged. It's my understanding that Gary Kerr was also involved in the design of the replica, therefore I have the up-most confidence that the Round 2 version will be amazing!
 
It's funny that the MR is the standard to some. When Scott took my masters, created by hand, over the match them up to his friends MR, he found it amazing how close my masters were to that ship, especially considering that I only used a card model anf fiberglass to start and that I was using the Sinclair and Casimiro prints and pictures and measurements of the studio model.

If you go here you can see the methodology that I used for both the 350th and 47" (240 scale) TOS as well as other craft, essentially building my own prints etc. and moving forward from there.

KTM's Depot47 Ship Builder: Day 3 "Learn all that is learnable."

I'm surprised that more people, especially here, haven't built their own 350th TOS Enterprises considering how much they know about the subject and considering all of the talent here.

Still, considering all of the information I've amassed over the years, I'm sure that I could go out to the garage and do it all over again.
