1/24 scale Ralph McQuarrie concept X-Wing scratchbuild

REL, You need to make something ugly and crappy for ones. Something we can point at and say "Sure, REL made that detailed and amazing model but he also made this crappy thing"

I couldn't agree more. His talant is so frustrating! :)

Beautiful REL.

Look at that horrible wood table replica - there are weird scratches all over that thing... :lol

But Yea - That's a really amazing x-wing Rel.
(kinda miss the lack of coke cans though)

Top-shelf work!

Is the canopy a WIP, though? Because there's a really subtle curve to the one in the painting, which it would be a shame to miss.

Don´t provoke him! Once he proudly presents a crappy model we´ll be depressed even more because it would be crappy by his standards and still be much better than most of us could do...:lol

Seeing as the canopy is integral to the hull, id have easily come to the conclusion, that it isnt a WIP :rolleyes.
Gotta say this made me chuckle, maybe you were bored?, Its a physical model, from a painting, and many of Ralph's sketches, dont work spot on in the physical world, i recall the Sandcrawler needed a tweak or two to become a real object.
Rich, LOVE the canopy buddy :lol

Maybe if we limited his work tools...He Gets only 1 exacto blade for the styrene cutting and can only paint with a crappy plastic paint brush. and he can't use any vinyl cutter or computercontrolled tools...:lol

Ya get what ya get...and like it.

Gee, thanks for the quick shoot-down, guys. Don't everyone answer for Rich at once! :rolleyes

Seeing as the pieces on show are in primer, with no indication that anything has hit rubber yet, I just as easily came to the conclusion that things might be open to change.

Far from it. I simply took enough interest to offer a constructive criticism, rather than the 100%-praise "That's great!" comments that seem to greet every major project here, whether they deserve it or not.

It's not a negative comment. I never said there was anything wrong with the model, just that there's a curve in the artwork (fact) that I don't see reflected in the masters (subjective observation). If that's Rich's interpretation of the artwork and it's in it's final form, so be it.

Small wonder that constructive criticism is in short supply on the RPF, when it's met with this kind of hostility and condescension.

No problems on the criticism. I originally incorporated the slight curve in the canopy on the first pulls, but it just didn't look right when it translated to the rest of the shape, to me.

So I resculpted the canopy with sharp angles to contrast the soft curves of the rest of the ship, which to my eye makes it look more sleek and deadly.

I put in the wing hinges, then thickened the back side of the vac formed hull to have enough thickness for mold/casting.

Finished the last two wings. The wings are thicker towards the body, and thinner towards the edges. Seems like something easy to do, but it's very deceiving in it's level of difficulty.

Well, there's the whole story! Cheers, Richard, nice to know! :thumbsup

It's one of those subtle differences that look real
cool but are a pain to achieve!!:thumbsup

I've been a fan of the early concepts for years, so this particular project makes me giddy. Lucas has killed most of my interest in Star Wars, so that's saying something. Fantastic work.
