1/24 scale Ralph McQuarrie concept X-Wing scratchbuild

I'm starting on the R2 unit. There's not much to go on, so I'm making it based on all the drawings and sketches available.

Just to drop in a note on Ralph's behalf - while many of us grew up thinking of everything in the painting as his design, Ralph would be quick to point out that the X-Wing was Joe Johnston's concept. As was the TIE Fighter, and even the Death Star surface detail concepts in this particular production painting. Ralph was taking the diverse design concepts George had chosen (in this case Joe's) and incorporating them into a dynamic setting to serve as inspiration to the rest of the crew who were tasked with realizing these images in three dimensions.

While Ralph certainly had his share of designs brought to life in the films, he was not the only person contributing amazing work.

The Art of Ralph McQuarrie

A pedant writes: the basic configuration of the X-wing is George Lucas's concept, not Johnston's or even Cantwell's. Lucas did a 1974 sketch showing dragster body and 4 X-splayed wings with 4 long guns mounted on wing tips, before Cantwell or Johnston were hired. This concept was fleshed out by Cantwell, then given a complete industrial design overhaul by Joe Johnston, before being 'edited for the stage' by Grant McCune. McQuarrie's painting, from Nov. 75 - very late - is intriguing in that it reflects the decision to scrap Lucas' requested bubble canopy due to bluescreen trouble. It may even be the source of the final canopy design; I've yet to see a non-bubble Johnston design.

Rel...that is really coming along nicely. I have to say, probably one of my favorite build threads in a very long time. Cannot wait to see some paint and weathering on this!!

Id vote for the Y wing Frank.....i kinda like the McQ Y...the TIE i guess looks very close to what we already know and love.....where as the Y wing....it would be very fresh?

I do like the Y Wing and I believe I will tackle that one, but the A Wing is next in this line.

I agree with Frank. You might want to re-consider doing the "A".

The A-Wing concept is so close to the studio model, if you make an exact reproduction, it will just end up looking like an inaccurate replica of the filming model. Make sense?

I am ALL OVER that concept X-Wing. I have always loved the "cleaness" of that design. I am already standing in line when you have someone to cast the kits!

Thanks for doing this. Great job!

Now stop posting and hurry up and get it done :lol

I like the idea TBH, id have gone for the Y wing, but the A wing is a good choice.....its still very McQ' in design.
I know you love the A wing Rich, so go for it, itll still do very well IMO.
