Hello,
I'm new here and thought I'd post my current obsession. I'm building an accurized 1/24 R2 to use in my Salzo V3 X-wing.

So far I've built the legs and barrel. The barrel is hollowed for the lights and has a photo etched brass skin. Both the legs & barrel will be cut down to the proper dimension for the X-wing.

I've got the dome hollowed out and am applying the details currently.

COmments welcome.

Uh, yeah I'd say. Welcome to the boards! How are you doing the dome?

Thanks for the warm reception.

I first made 2 solid resin castings of a 17mm test tube. This formed the outside of the body and dome.

One was cut up for the body and bored out to make it hollow as you see in the pic. The .005 brass was photo etched and wrapped around the resin "tube".

The other casting was cut apart to make the dome. It was bored out with a ball end mill to make it hollow as well.

I used sheet styrene to make the "eye" along with a bead I cut down to make the lenz.

The panels are either .005 brass or electrical tape.

Dude, you're making the Death Star and talking about work! :lol
Just kidding.

Tell me about it - good god!

Small scale projects like yours blow my mind and totally gain my respect. To carry such detail on a small scale like that takes great skill and patience. :thumbsup

That's very cool.
Nice job, especially considering you could have opted for an off-the-shelf solution (there are so many R2s in various shapes and sizes, no doubt something in 1/24th.)
The etching looks amazing!
Keep posting your progress!

Part of the attraction was the challenge. I had company this week so no progress at this time..I'll be getting back to it now that they have left

Gotta love it when company shows up!:) Can't wait to see more progress pics on your great R2.
Thanks for the PM. I just got my power back from last weeks ice storm here in KY. I've been itching to get back into my V2 build.
