1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Just about done!

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

Almost there now. Four parts took damage today (fixed two), dunno how one of them took damage and the other (the homemade part) took damage when I cut it down a bit to fit better. It was a perfect fit before I mounted the skin, but yhea..

My method of choice to attach the skins to the body was small nails, these will be painted over with white paint.

I bumped into the ankle cylinder with my knee, so it fell off. Fixed.

Sorry for poor quality. The left one is so to say without paint.

Fixed.

These were supposed to go inside the missing areas on the outer skin, but I couldn't get any of them to fit properly - cutting them down won't cut it (pun intended).. Suggestions are welcome!

As he stands right now.

Tomorrow I will at least paint both of the remaining parts and mount them and paint over the nails, they will be visible anyways but hopefully less visible. I'm looking forward to see all the parts and the back skin in place! :D

Damn. I'm jealous. :D

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

Thanks! :)

The eye lens came today, was a square around it - now cut off of course.

The plan for the coming days is to get these parts ready for the front skin, the large data port is painted but need a clear coat. I think I will check back when they're all done!

I hope to be done with the R2 in around 2-3 weeks from now. :)

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

looks great! Amazing what the eye does for the build!

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

Looking good, cant wait to see the front skin on. :)

Not sure what to suggest abut the inner panels. In what way do they not fit properly? If the problem is bending them around such a small distance rare earth magnets will probably work to keep them held down in place while the glue sets.
loving the robot.

Looking great...What did you use for your HPs?

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

I have been busy for a while, and my R2D2 build has been put on hold for a short while, well, 3-4 weeks, sadly. The R2 has been too long without any progress. I hope to get back on my build now and to finish up the R2.

Spacebob, when I insert them they sort of bend outwards and I don't have enough hands nor the capability to hold it all around while the glue sets. I like your tip - worth a shot and some are on the way even though I might have to wait a while for them.

MrDynamite, the HPs are holo projectors, right? They are bought parts, all three of them. Nice looking R2 you have there by the way, coming along nicely! :)'

I Painted some parts today and I aim to finish the rest tomorrow.

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

nice job young sir...almost there & its looking great!
I'm scratch building an R6, but i build from cardboard & household scraps.
keep up the good work dude.

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

Sadly, I sold my R2 about a week ago as a WIP.
I too used the lamp shade idea, but found it wasn't the stated 18inches but slightly smaller, (I wasn't worried about the height as i was going to pad the extra) But, since mine was exactly 455mm in diameter (per club spec) it would never of fitted correctly (hence the plug i was building to create a resin mold)
I bought a laser cutter with the proceeds...

I can assist on parts, but sadly I'm not "qualified" yet here.

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

Johnny Darko, I just checked out your build - I must say it's looking surprisingly awesome! It's quicker and probably easier, and you won't have a product in the end which you can barely move at all. :D

Disappointing to hear, MrDynamite, but I'm sure it was the right call and that it will be finished by the new owner. Love those clean dome lines, you did a good job. :)

My goal this week is to finish the two parts on the right and the last (upper) vent on Sunday. I will be gone on Friday and Saturday.

Turned out I was gone most of the Sunday as well..

When I look on the progress the last few days I feel very lazy, not busy.

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

Hey Kev,

R2 is really coming along. As a member of the sleepless night club I can tell you that sometimes those days off and lazy weekends are worth it. We all need to recharge the batteries. :)

Even more, I love looking at the newspapers.

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

Wise words SofaKing, wise words! :)
The newspapers - weird language? Hehe,

I have a busy week ahead of me. Therefore I think I will be back here in about a week. I want to get him closer to done and eventually completely done, but can't this week, sadly.

At some point I will need to cut out a bit of the top of the body for this part as well. Notice a couple of spots free of paint - i dropped it while taking the first photo. :D
Was a 1 minute fix, nothing big.

With the utility arms my plan is to glue some cardboard between the utility arms and the body's support beams.

The upper went is now done, I think it came out pretty sweet.

(Before the pictures below)

Inner skin, about 1 cm (0.39 inches) too short, hopefully a strip of HIPS will fix that if needed at the end.

The sign isn't important atm, but I shouldn't have clear coated the new paint without proper grounding, I think.

Flashback! I looked through some older photos of the R2, and a lot has happend sine last August.

What's on the agenda now is to cut out both the skins. First the inner skin will get the cutouts for the shoulders then I will cut out the outer skin (the skin on the outside of the other) then lastly the inner skin. Assembly comes dead last of course.

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

It's always fun to go back and see how far you've come with any build. Looks great! Can't wait to see more. :)

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

Finally the agenda for the near future is clear, now I can get back for real! :)

Taped on the inner skin to draw a line on the inside, to line up with the parts on the bottom later.

To be cut out, tomorrow? Just missed the screw, luckily.

More to come in the next days!

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

NICE! That skin makes all the difference in the world. :)
