1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Just about done!

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Platform & some part paiting in prog

Hi Kev,

If you decide to weather your platofrm, be sure to use the same type of water based paints you used in grade / elementary school. You should be able to find them at your local art supply store - they are not expensive at all.

I used these paints when I weathered the quad...

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Platform & some part paiting in prog

I decided to go with some model paint, water based of course. Tried to mix the brown paint I had with water yesterday as the can didn't say anything, turned out to be oil based. Picked up a new one on sale for 3 bucks.

I actually thought about looking how you weathered your quad and was prepared to look through the thread to find the correct pages, but you saved me that trouble. Thanks, was helpful to see how you did it. :)

2 contrasts of 3 different colors. Turned out, I just used 1 of each.

All done.

Because it took a while to do it with just a brush and a piece of clothing.

Thank God it's water based, was almost equally as much on the platform as it was on the floor, but I didn't think about taking a picture at first...

Look past the piece of HIPS inside the body (it's a simple bend-test).

It sure does take up some room.

Isn't too much weathered, but I think it's great. Some weathering will also be added to the bottom of the feet tomorrow or on Saturday.

Great, really inspiring thread, i read it since start to end :D .

Thank you guys, always cheers me up a lot when I hear that! Gimpee, glad you feel that way! :)

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

Tried to heat up the outer back skin today to bend it, no result. Painted a bit on an old sign and weathered the feet and battery boxes. Took a while as it's hard to weather a glossy surface like the sides of the feet (where the HIPS is), the paint crumbles together costing more time.

I was aiming for a dirty look, as if he's been driving outside. But I think I might have overdone it, so I'm considering to wash some off.

Painted text on the old R2D2 sign today to the correct blue color on the top. Look at the left to see previously/now.

These legs aren't as alike as they once were.

In the upcoming week I hope to install the back skin, both of the back skins. :)

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

I think the weathering looks great, I wouldn't change a thing.

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

If you think the weathering is a bit heavy try to just wash it away from the outer or high spots. Leave plenty in the nooks and inner corners.
good weathering really makes it come alive.

Here is one of mine to show what I mean, although artoo is usually a little less than this...

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

Hey Kev,

R2 is looking really good so far! I see your concern re: the weathering. Don't worry too much. If you used water based paint, we should be ok. :) Take a damp rag and gently wipe away the areas you're not happy with. One, if not two things will happen. When you begin to gently wipe away the first layer it will not only remove the "grime and weathering" but it will also spread some of the grime into the paint giving a more realistic look and feel. It might take a few attempts, but that should do it.

When I chatted with Adam Savage during the Mythbuster's Tour I thanked him personally for releasing this video of how to weather objects. We chatted for a few minuted about different weathering techniques that are highlighted in his video. I watched this 10 times before jumping in and weathering the quad laser. This might help you...

Good luck! And keep posting those pics! (NOTE: If you used oil based paints as your base, the water based paint will not work)

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

Thanks guys! :)

Spacebob, that sure is a great weathering, nice!

SofaKing01, of course I also watched that video before I started, hehe. Watched it once for a few months ago and once right before I weathered the platform. A lot of useful tips there!

I have thought about changing the weathering, but now I kinda like it. Maybe the change was too much at the start. I think I will let it be, looks nice now. Ddidn't really do anything with the R2 yesterday, but did some today.

Repainted a little bit on the battery harnesses today, nothing big.

This part again, woo! Almost there now.

Cleaned up the sign.

Broke one of the utility arms when I sanded away most of the paint, glued together now, about time. May look weird, but it works to hold it in place.

Part for the back skin, will be added blue tomorrow.

Found out today that I forgot about the coin slot returns for the back skin.. Will make two out of hips tomorrow.

Added: lens for the eye is now en route. Hopefully, he can have an eye and a completed dome in a week or so!

Just some painting and made two coin returns, meant coin returns in the previously post.
The coin returns are drying with chrome paint right now, aka just about done.

Coin returns, the top left piece is a flaw because I had to get the non-glossy surface out towards view. Paint won't stick on the glossy surface.

Coin returns, the backside.

Sorry for bad focus. A small gap in the hight of the utility arms due to my fix, but not big enough to be a problem - hopefully!

Both parts now done!

The goal about installing both of the back skins and the parts this week still stands.

Two of the parts below (octagon port and power coupling) are drying with clear coat now and will be ready for install, either tomorrow or on Sunday.

Clear coat done.

You're getting close. I'm excited to see it coming together.

Loving the progress, really coming together with the bits and bobs,
nearly there.

Re: (PIC HEAVY) 1:1 R2D2 building from scratch - Skin & parts in progress

I'm not the fastest builder around, but I'm getting there now.
Was a bit more work and time-consuming than expected just to cut away two small parts of wood. Sawed and drilled and in the end a bit of wood cracked off on both sides. Wasn't too easy to get access with a saw or the fein machine there either, used the most slim saw I could find - which felt like it was also the dullest one.

Had to cut the skins to better fit on the body and to fit the parts better as well.

Test fit parts.

I love the middle part, so clean lines.

The same part on the right side is now broken too.

Finished cutaway.

The night is descending and I have decided to wait till tomorrow to mount the skins and the parts, but everything is ready to go!

The body remains just as strong as before, was unexpected. Check back at this time tomorrow! :)
