1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

This is an UNBELIEVABLE FIND! I KNOW you had the "AAAAAAA" moment as we all do when finding that real world part. Now... Are there any out there? ;)

I've seen a few photos of astronauts training with mock up consoles on the ground, I almost wonder if the part in the Falcon isn't a replica of the skylab console, but an actual part? There are some super specific details, like the sides and the shelf, that make me wonder if they found an emtpy cabinet, if you will, and dressed it.

Made my mind go "Bloop!!!" SS. That's twice in one day, what with the latest mini pit update pics.

I'm sure you've gone bonkers comparing all aspects and angles of the navcom with your find there SS, I rekon it's a hit. check out the floor/base area - that's a lot of similar design detail, too much to be by chance.

I wonder if the base unit was made by Elliott (Bros) Computers, they had a manufacturing building near the studios and their stuff appears in films... I need a good stiff tea.

Hi Gang,

Just a quick update...

I found this tube in the shop. Let's hope the MDF relaxes a bit and takes on the form - not the warped form but something close ;)

Well,.mdf is just sawdust, glue and heat. You're on the right path to get it to curve, but you will need what was suggested of some kind of filler to keep it open.. If you clamped it onto the shell, filled the slices and let it cure it will.keep that shape

tried to read as much as possible ... haven't seen this Thread before ( wasn't here for quite a while )

You guys are insane !! No doubt about it ... somethings clearly wrong in your heads ... i like that

Just a thought... but will the grooved MDF bend the other way? so its smooth side out??
Just thinking it would mean you can use the grooves to fill with glue/resin to hold the shape & leave you with much less work to fill & smooth the outer surface.

Regarding the console, I've see very similarly shaped consoles in other places. I don't have any pictures though. I'll try looking around though.

I don't get on here as much as I'd like. So I see besides the 1:1 scale, you are doing two other smaller scales as well right. So whats the plan for those?
Sure are doing a great job on it all.

Yep, the MF cockpit windows look much better with double the trim! MDF is easy to bend...1) you can do thicker saw lines and it'll bend more easily than smaller one and you can reverse it and have the nice side up. Do glue a thin sheet of wood or plastic, set it for 24 hours and it'll hold the form you want.

It was my assumption that the grooves were going to be facing outwards. Much easier to bend and then filling the grooves will keep it from curling. Once dried, sand and cover with the For Sale sign styrene. Of course, all these layers add thickness that has to be dealt with to keep all the elevations even.

Hi Gang,

Time for that "End of the Weekend Update"... 9 Parts! Since we're only allowed 20 images per post, I'll be breaking the weekends updates into many parts. This actually works out for the better as I can spread the update out across the week. Enjoy!

Part I - The Window

I added the trim to the interior side of the window

Something didn't look right
IMG_20181122_095800_zpspeweepsw.jpg

I pulled the trim (note the bad area) and move back into tighter position

Much better

IMG_20181122_100744_zpsgev4utl9.jpg

Added a filler strip - which I will then add actual filler and smooth

Part II Below

Part II

With the interior window trim drying I flipped the canopy over and added the same trim to the interior beams

I then cut styrene to shape for the beam skins

I then trimmed the skin to meet the trim

Hey MM,

The MDF is "starting" to keep the curve but its always those outside edges that want to continue to pop away. I have to create / find a smaller diam tube that can house the MDF 1) without snapping it in half along the cut lines and 2) help bend the MDF to shape.

Clamping it onto the frame is possible but I'm not sure how it can hold the shape without popping back into its desired position. I'm going to try taping the MDF into a smaller diam and see if that works. The other idea is fiberglass. I can create a FG panel the same size as the MDF. I used to work with FG a LONG time ago so it shouldn't be that difficult. The objective is manipulating/rolling the FG just before it cures to the point it becomes unworkable.

Lots of choices! lol

Hey D,

Yes... we are insane. ;)

Thanks for taking the time to read through the post. We've been all over the place with the cockpit and we're finally venturing out into other areas of the ship - in a slightly smaller. But the plan is to build the Nav Computer full scale once I work the bugs out of 1/4 scale version.
