1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Hi Gang,

PART II

Love that seam line!
IMG_20181111_140306_zps31br2whp.jpg

The upper canopy and window are near perfect... I still need to go BACK and fix the lower nose section
IMG_20181111_141207_zpsmhaiolvx.jpg

The lower part of the nose is pushing out just a bit too far
IMG_20181111_141225_zps4m2mt8e5.jpg

I primed the window to help blend with the canopy. I love this angle!
IMG_20181111_141230_zps6d2lxial.jpg

I have to remove the trim from the top window and replace - dried slightly out of place
IMG_20181111_141239_zps6g8v9l5a.jpg

Yucky gap!
IMG_20181111_141251_zpsygv6z5ua.jpg

Flathead screw keeps the window in place with the canopy. BUT, I might double up the trim to give them a little more bulk

And this...
IMG_20181111_141305_zpsrlzima8u.jpg

Is where we are!

A bit more work is required on the instruction manual. I really want to knock that out so I can get back to work on the 1/4 scale.

Images of the Full Scale Cockpit Coming Soon! Stay Tuned! :)

Sweet!! Loved that update Greg and, btw, the length you're going into ironing all of the little details to make it more real(y)

Thanks so much, J! I'm sorry the update was so short. But it is nice to see some different and forward progress on the canopy. I'm actually considering putting windows in!

At 1/4 scale it's almost impossible to let those little details slip. Everybody is going to be comparing to the full scale!

Hi Gang,

Didn't get much done on the 1/4 scale this weekend. Apart from Geeking out with Luke (more on that later), the laser cutter was acting up again and I was working on the console instruction manual. But...

Part I

I laser cut this practice piece from MDF

I'm trying to find the perfect laser cutter settings to etch the MDF that will allow me to simply roll the panel over the main body
IMG_20181117_080042_zpsbwljxabi.jpg

I laser cut a 44x30 in sheet
IMG_20181117_092327_zpssenv0dqh.jpg

It's NOT perfect and the lines need to be a bit deeper but I'm going to see if I can use it - I need to relax the MDF
IMG_20181117_092333_zpsotdarfzb.jpg

The idea is that the skin will just lift off exposing all the frame work
IMG_20181117_092337_zps0zjvocpt.jpg

MDF was still a bit tight

Once its fitted, I'll cover with styrene to hide the MDF and then we have fun and add the armor plating and greeblies!

I then turned my attention back to the canopy window trim - I had to perform some minor surgery on the front center trim

Much better

I then doubled up all the trim

I love seeing these updates. What got me this time was the scale. I know it’s a 1:4 scale build, but seeing your hand holding the MDF really put it into perspective. Otherwise it still looks like you’re building a life size cockpit!

Looking good!

I wonder if you were to coat the MDF with resin or even white glue and let it set up, it would most likely hold form and act as a cap for the canopy like you mentioned. Just a thought anyway. If you fill all the voids it can't flatten back out.

The build looks beautiful!

Just wanted to interrupt for a sec to circle back to the nav console... I think I figured out how to get the exact dimension...

This just blew my flippin mind

Skylab 3 Apollo Telescope Mount

This is an UNBELIEVABLE FIND! I KNOW you had the "AAAAAAA" moment as we all do when finding that real world part. Now... Are there any out there? ;)

Today was a crazy collision of my world meeting greg and chatting all things falcon and i really thank greg for taking the time to come meet up!

Guys / Gals...

Saturday was AWESOME! I got the opportunity to meet up with and chat with Luke re: all things Falcon! For those unfamiliar with Luke and his project, he and his team were/are responsible for building their full scale TFA cockpit with corridor and ramp that lives over the pond in the UK! An absolute epic build. I had NO IDEA the amount of effort and work they put into their build. I was SO jealous when I first saw it! ;)

Outside of the usual band of suspects, Luke is one of the few guys on the PLANET who can appreciate the trials and tribulations re: a full scale Falcon cockpit build! The best and most obvious connection was, not only the obvious build, his having to rebuild the Volvo Panels 6 times! I laughed out loud! I've been there! I felt and continue to feel his pain! The highlight for me was our spending hours geeking out looking over photos of his build and helping each other identify several real world parts!

Even more, look for me, Luke, Izzy and the band of misfits and geeks to begin collaborating with one another, share stories and files and help each other with our projects. I hope that Luke is able to get to Dallas, TX and visit the cockpit and we're able to get to the UK to check out his build. That would be epic!

It was an absolute blast! :)

Hi T,

Thanks so much! I love posting these updates - that means forward progress.

For years I sat and looked at the full scale build and over time I just didn't see the scale anymore. But the 1/4 scale sits at 28 inches (711mm) wide. Although its still 1/4 scale, I still can't get over how big it is... which doesn't make any sense! lol

As I've stated, all the greeblie flies exist at full scale. I simply scale them down and boom... 1/4 scale. My hope is to have a near identical copy to the full scale build. Fingers crossed.

Thanks, K!

Just before work this morning I stopped by the shop and put the MDF into a barrel to help with the curve. If the MDF holds its basic shape, I was thinking of doing that exact thing - good call! Coat the inside with adhesive and styrene. My hope is both will pull the MDF inward. If the form holds then skin the exterior side.
