1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Hey, just a poke to let you guys know I got the matte box display simulator ready to go whenever you're ready. Do you have a an LCD or CRT picked out to fit in it?

I've been working with some great little HDMI enabled displays at work that would fit the bill. What's the display opening size for the matte box? I could help you spec a screen for it.

Also, let me know if you need Arduino code written to drive it. I can help with that too.

Hey M,

I know I owe you some pics of the monitor. What exactly is it that you're looking for? I did post a few images of what we have:

http://www.therpf.com/showthread.php?t=147319&page=197&p=3264010&viewfull=1#post3264010

Let me know if these help or if you need something more detailed. :)

The main thing I'll need is the max resolution of the CRT display when you plug a PC into it. I'm guessing it's pretty low res if it's an old analogTV.

Then I'll want to know the physical size of the screen and the size of the opening in the matte box so the game doesn't get cropped awkwardly.

Well... that's the real trick isn't it... ;)

Daniel just finished making the matte box mold so we should be able to cast our first box soon. I dont want to mod the real matte box. So... it wont be until we get that first cast that we'll be able to give you any real working information.

I know that doesn't help...

J,

This is from Scott or resident CRT guru...

"...Whatever the PC is outputting as it's resolution.... CRT's don't have maximum or native resolutions. As long as it syncs they draw what they're given..."

True. But at some point the CRT won't be able to effectively render the pixels it's given.

Its native resolution will probably be way lower than what your graphics card can create. At the low end it'll be 320x240 (same as VHS) and max out at 720x486 (DVD).

We'll also want to test for any anamorphism as many older displays didn't use square pixels.

Oh the joys of video...

Hi Gang,

FINALLY... Some updates!

As always... we never get as far as we would have liked. The paint I added to the nose secondary access panel expanded just a little bit - MDF is a wonderful thing. So I have to go back a remove some material to make it fit back into place - not a big deal nor a show stopper but it was a bit frustrating...

So... we finally added some paint to the armrest panel

Hi Gang,

I was looking over all the images from the new EP VII cockpit and something in this particular image caught my attention that I don't think ANYBODY NOTICED!!! Study the pic very carefully. Look at the center console. Now look just to the left of the of throttle housing and just below the nav screen! UMMMMMMMM... HMMMMM...

millennium-falcon-05_zpsaf117e44.jpg

The new prop designers added / changed something. It does not appear to be part of the "instrument panel". It's something else! What the HE** is that?!!!!!!!!!

I like that after 30 years, the falcon is slightly different.

It would be utterly silly if it was exactly the same.

Awesome update!

Great work guys! Every panel is turning into a piece of 70's styled abstract art.

Thank you, Sir! After all that bad weather it was nice getting out there and being productive! :)

Hi Mvan,

Thanks! You are absolutely correct... it would be silly if it looked exactly the same. We HAVE to go into this with the idea that there will be changes. :)

Hi Gang,

This is the area I was looking at. It would appear that they added something similar to a "Sight Glass Flow Indicator" similar to the image below. It's def clear and appears to have a ring or "collar" near the top (toward the canopy) and at least 4 bolts (2 we can see) mounting the part into the console. Again, I'm taking a total stab in the dark...

The angle of the greeblie coming off the back of the console seems to fit. I don't think, whatever it is, is sitting up toward the instrument panel just under the nav screen.

Any ideas?

If only the instrument panel lights weren't blazing away and washing it out. I'm having trouble seeing the greeblie you show as the vague spot on the console, though. To me, the curve looks more like an edge on view of a headset just sitting over top of some new display of some sort. I will admit, however, my rookie status in the photo analysis department.

Hi Gang,

Spent a little time late yesterday afternoon on the console. I wound up having to recreate the secondary nose lid for a more secure fit

Just a quick thought... I really like the "black" color of the Krylon spray paint I used on the armrest and I am considering painting the rest of the console with the same spray. But I'm not sure how the spray will take/adhere to the existing paint. Any ideas?

Say goodbye to the old
20150317_164934_zpstxu58df7.jpg

In with the new - I traced the outline from the main nose panel
20150317_164942_zpsc075ytjh.jpg

Luckily I had an extra secondary panel that had been laser cut a few weeks back - taped into correct position
20150317_170702_zps15dlw4ys.jpg

Flipped over and applied the glue
20150317_170901_zpsxp5xjbzo.jpg

TaDa - now we play the waiting game
20150317_171036_zpsilgfmhlp.jpg

I then changed focus and cut Han's back box panel (still need to cut Chewie's) - not sure how I'm going to greeblie this panel
20150317_174629_zpsntszapfa.jpg

Lots of sanding to get the angles right
20150317_174638_zpspa7lp7fs.jpg

Then it was time for more filler - I'm holding off drilling the holes of the smaller LEDs for a reason

20150317_181327_zpsjgzorab1.jpg

20150317_181333_zpsbehu4dnr.jpg

I then scored this line to further separate the upper and lower panels - I'm considering filling with paintable silicone (?)
20150317_181343_zpsxjvdryqs.jpg

The BEST PART! I ordered 1100 of these 5mm LED Lens Panel Holders. They are designed to mount to 1/4" panels with a .21" stand off giving the appearance of a panel mounted bulb! I'm really excited to get these installed! They should be here anytime!

Hi Gang,

We have some updates... and not just your average update!

We have LED Holder/Covers! 1100 of them!
20150318_164045_zps6vcpbped.jpg

These 5mm LED holders fit the flat top LEDs I purchased a while back - SNAPS into place
20150318_164139_zpszwlfk8io.jpg

20150318_164159_zpsvhgf7sry.jpg

I had/have to enlarge/drill ALL the 3mm holes to fit the LED holder. Not fun at all and to be honest... not very pretty. I'm going to design a small acrylic donut and laser cut to fit around the LED holder to hide the ugly edges... But they still look good!
20150318_173412_zpsfczld629.jpg

Further back the edges seem to vanish
20150318_173437_zpsy8cq8mw1.jpg

20150318_175003_zpsutgl8bf5.jpg

I also did a little touch up work with the paint brush
20150318_175044_zpspugs0cod.jpg

20150318_175048_zpsh3lp0elq.jpg

You can see how far they stand off the panel. The y simply snap into place and the LED is nice and snug!
20150318_175214_zpsu70hi4hw.jpg

While I still had light I jumped back to the console... I then realized a HUGE mistake...
20150318_181310_zpsvud4tqga.jpg

The holes on the lower instrument panel are too close to the top of the panel... UGH
20150318_181925_zpsqynfbn3b.jpg

So... I get to FILL all these holes and then redrill new ones...
20150318_181931_zpsrmwkrv9v.jpg

GRRRRRRR
20150318_181939_zpsynooksva.jpg

Good news... the new nose panel fits perfectly!

Back to the LEDs - Wiring
20150318_182916_zpsysx8ryvm.jpg

Several of the small LEDs will be connected to the various switches

Can you imagine all of this lit up?

I LOVE IT! :)
