1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Sorry for the LONG delay... life has been kicking my butt the last few days.... BUT... Here are some much needed updates! I decided to switch gears and work on the quad and window surround! :)

Added some filler to the window and took some measurements for the quad...

Started to build the quad support cover

Cut out a groove...

Created some supports - I'll greeblie these up :)

Closed off the ends

Lots of sanding and details coming! The idea is to cover the ends with a larger tube. I think I've got it figured out in my head...

I also recreated the quad barrel supports. I originally used MDF and it just wasn't strong enough. I'll sand these down and paint

Nice and thick support piece. One for the top and the bottom set of barrels :)

Parts catching some rays...

I've resisted it for so long but I can't help myself any more...

This is sofaking awesome!!!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Not much of a update... its been sprinkling here and there so I wasn't able to get much done...

Finished most of the panel work on the quad support cover - I cut out the holes like the original
20130714_145548_zps65ad87e0.jpg

I then put a piece of MDF behind the openings

Up close

I'll then detail the top - not sure how yet... or if I should?

The plan is to cut two of these PVC pipes to approx 8" and then mount to the support cover on either side

The PVC pipe will cover most of the other PVC pipes lending to a more realistic look - I hope

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Sofaking, I want to thank you for pushing the rain clouds my way. We've had a nice lot of rain over here the last 3 days. It's raining as I type this.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Unfortunately, now I have to report you for witchcraft or voodoo, or whatever black magic you used to move the clouds.

Lucky Astrology Mood Watches... that's the secret to my power

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Sorry for the lack of updates... I haven't been feeling to good the last few days and decided to take it easy. But, this morning I jumped out and was able to get a few things done. Storm clouds are rolling in and it cut my day a little short... ugh...

Ran to the home improvement store and picked up one of these for the cockpit door
20130721_113413_zps7b6177b2.jpg

I'll mount 3 or 4 rollers to the top of the door, align the 48" track, mount and then presto! We should have a door

Test fitting
20130721_113718_zps05f70834.jpg

I applied several coats of shellac to the quad laser base. I'm going to apply 10-15 coats before sanding, priming and paint
20130721_130359_zps0ebad188.jpg

First coat of paint has been applied to the door. I made the mistake of painting directly in the hot sun... not sure why... I have to sand down a few areas and then paint again
20130721_130413_zpsbe6d6741.jpg

That's it for now... hopefully the rain will let up... :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

This is looking great. Like, every time I come in and look at this thread (every day,) you've done something that just blows my mind. Keep up the awesome work!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Well... the rain let up for a bit and I was able to quickly sand the door. I then brought it inside and painted...

I thought this looked really cool! After sanding the dust gave the door that "used" look... :)

All painted!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

I hate that electric sander. Not that brand or model exactly, but those circular, spinning ones in general. They're nearly impossible to control. They really should have a proper handle, rather than forcing the user to grip that damned bulge. I've spent countless hours using that thing, and I only hate it more and more with every use.

Thanks so much! I'm trying! Had I not been sick I was really hoping to have the door track installed... Maybe today? :)

I had a lot of success with it! I only use it for flat surfaces - NEVER for tight spaces or uneven planes. Much of the control, for me, comes from the grit paper I use. I do wish there was a variable speed option... but I have no complaints. :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

WE HAVE A SLIDING DOOR! After a few modifications I finally mounted the sliding door. And she works!

I created a quick "template" to get all the correct spacing/measurements. I quickly realized the sliders were too high so I had to remove part of the bottom of the door.

Taking measurements

Removing part of the bottom... I cut through several bolts - the LONG WAY! :)

20130725_165423_zpsa700fc5f.jpg

I then used these bolts to attach the track to the door frame plus a 2x4 for added strength
20130725_171252_zpsc9f7ca70.jpg

First bolt attached - fortunately the track rested RIGHT up against the back of the door frame. LUCKY!

You can see the 1/8" gap between the door and the panels

Looking down the track
20130725_1729340_zps01537d14.jpg

From the top - I have to remove part of the support the track is attached to. As you can see, the panels will not fit unless I remove the material just to the left of the track

Hey Look! A Video! That's the fan you hear to keep me cool during those hazy, hot a stupid days

I'm going to create a guide on the "floor" for the door to follow along with and not swing in and out. I also plan to add some padding / felt to the door frame so the door doesn't get too scratched up.

More to Come! :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

You should upload some videos of everything. I'd like to see the flickering lights and sliding door in motion.
