Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica
Inspiration knows no schedule
Hi G
I was contemplating your doorstop this evening and couldn't stop fiddling and fettling :lol
So I decided to look around for a more suitable dome. The original one I was going to use didn't have a wide enough radius to look right.*
I came up with a few alternatives
My first idea was to cover this little pot with oil clay and sculpt a dome around it (I thought the name was very fitting too :lol)
While that would have worked, it seemed a bit extreme. So did a bit more digging and found this spray can top
Now, I'm pretty limited tool wise, so I was a bit perplexed at how I was going to cut the top off squarely. As it happens, a curtain rail end (saved to turn into a lightsabre emitter end) came to the rescue. I couldn't believe what a good fit they were, and it held the lid really tight
That went into the drill which was then clamped in the vice, and I used a sharpie to cut the top off. It came out good for eyeballing :thumbsup
I then found a piece of tubing that fit the hole (it's a teensy bit smaller, so there is a bit of movement between it and the hole edge, I hope that's ok?) and cut a thin section off
I then secured the top to the base and glued the pipe section to the top using the door stop to keep everything lined up
I realise the top isn't smooth, so once the epoxy resin has cured, I'm going to give it a few coats of conformal acrylic (used to coat circuit boards to stop fluff and detritus from damaging components on PCB's). This will make it very smooth, and once I've filled the rim with oil clay and prepped it, it should be ready for moulding when I mix my next batch of silicone this weekend :thumbsup
I'll post results as I get them
