1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi G

Got some stuff done today. Would it be ok to post progress pics and blurb?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Inspiration knows no schedule

Hi G :)

I was contemplating your doorstop this evening and couldn't stop fiddling and fettling :lol

So I decided to look around for a more suitable dome. The original one I was going to use didn't have a wide enough radius to look right.*

I came up with a few alternatives

My first idea was to cover this little pot with oil clay and sculpt a dome around it (I thought the name was very fitting too :lol)

While that would have worked, it seemed a bit extreme. So did a bit more digging and found this spray can top

Now, I'm pretty limited tool wise, so I was a bit perplexed at how I was going to cut the top off squarely. As it happens, a curtain rail end (saved to turn into a lightsabre emitter end) came to the rescue. I couldn't believe what a good fit they were, and it held the lid really tight :)

That went into the drill which was then clamped in the vice, and I used a sharpie to cut the top off. It came out good for eyeballing :thumbsup

I then found a piece of tubing that fit the hole (it's a teensy bit smaller, so there is a bit of movement between it and the hole edge, I hope that's ok?) and cut a thin section off

I then secured the top to the base and glued the pipe section to the top using the door stop to keep everything lined up

I realise the top isn't smooth, so once the epoxy resin has cured, I'm going to give it a few coats of conformal acrylic (used to coat circuit boards to stop fluff and detritus from damaging components on PCB's). This will make it very smooth, and once I've filled the rim with oil clay and prepped it, it should be ready for moulding when I mix my next batch of silicone this weekend :thumbsup

I'll post results as I get them

Hey C,

AMAZING what can be done with some simple household items! You've got me so jazzed and anxiously waiting for more!

Can you believe it? I'm salavating!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

This is a great build! I've recently thought of doing something similar myself. Your work is definitely encouraging.

I've had similar problems finding cheap switches. One or two from Radio Shack is fine, but in the numbers you would need for this kind of cockpit it gets really pricey.

I remember hearing Harrison Ford comment that he had to ask George which switches he could flip, because most of them were cheap switches that didn't actually work. So, even they couldn't afford that many.

Keep up the good work.

Hi R,

Thanks for the kind words! :) I was VERY hesitant to get started on this build until I found Steve Starkillers 3D model (which is AMAZING!) Once I saw that I had to jump in and do it!

Yeah... the switches are a pain but I know they're out there somewhere. As I've said, I'm in no hurry to finish up. I'd rather do it right than compromise the project. :)

Stay Tuned... A few more Millennium Falcon projects are getting ready to start!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Staggering stuff! You know we all want one too?

Graet work!

Rich

Hi R,

Thanks! Its funny you say that... I've been chatting with a professional wood worker who has access to a CNC machine that he uses to cut wood. I am going to rebuild the console and have him cut all the basic parts for me. The good news... he'll have all the measurements / dimensions saved in his computer - think about it... :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Back Boxes are DONE!!! Mostly... Not the best pics... Sorry

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

I was just thinking... All the work I've put into this so far... HOW COULD ANYBODY throw something like the original in the dumpster after using it for a movie? I just can't even imagine it... Why not try to take it home or something????

Look for a electronic surplus store in your town.

They can be an aluminum junk paradise. I'm fortunate to have one local.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

UPDATES! I went to the local crafts store and picked up some new items. I went ahead and got the same mosiac tiles I purchased last time. Since this console is going to be static, I didnt want to use the clear acrylic tiles on this project.

I also added a few more greeblies to the back boxes. They looked a little empty once they were installed.

New items from craft store... you'll see...

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Almost finished the last of the front panel greeblies

Many panel lights have a jewel style glass/plastic lens. I painted the 15mm round stone crystal I picked up ay the crafts store with the same luminescent paint I used on the mosaic tiles.

HEY! She's mobile now! I added wheels to the base support which made it much easier to get in and out of the house. I also sprayed a layer of clear satin.

LOTS more to come!
