1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Hi R,

All the greeblies are cut from misc acrylic and MDF and in many cases a combo of both materials. I know there are a few spray chrome options out there, but I'm not sure of 1) whether the spray will work with MDF and painted surfaces and 2) how durable the sprays actually are.

I would really like to have the greeblies chrome plated but I have a feeling that would cost a fortune!

Hi Gang,

Simpler Early Morning Update...

Jessie cut the lower profile nose panel boxes

Side by Side Comparo - still need to grab a few greeblies from the auto parts store (the lower profile box looks much better)

Adhered the base plate for the nose panel boxes
20150423_181803_zpswyrdvw5q.jpg

Practice acrylic "donuts" that will go around ALL the LEDs. I really like how these finish off the look
20150423_161426_zps0psnjvya.jpg

Def hides any and all imperfections - mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm donuts
20150423_161416_zpsodmcvq9h.jpg

Something that I have been meaning to get around to but originally never saw - pin striping around the vertical gauges
20150423_210329_zpsqtbkwysd.jpg

20150423_210333_zpsvwih0lhq.jpg

The rest of the panels are coming in from the garage to be cleaned up and prepped for LEDs - some might undergo yet "another" facelift to match ESB and not the "hybrid" we originally decided on! The LED heavy panels have already been finished so the others wont take too long...

Stay Tuned for More - this is going to be a fun weekend - FINGERS CROSSED / Weather permitting as always!

Possible Greeblie Find?

As many of you know I am attempting to find / recreate ALL the greeblies found in the ESB cockpit. One of these greeblies (among MANY) has bugged me from the moment I first laid eyes on it and attempting to recreate it has been nothing less than frustrating! The greeblie is mounted on the back wall behind the nav chair on Han's side. Well... Jessie may have just pointed us in the right direction

The part in question

We know the designers bundled several different objects together to make one simple greeblie. We think this guy might be parts of a vintage typewriter... We're NOT saying that this IS it... but the similarities between the objects/shapes are pretty close

Why are focusing on a typewriter? We also stumbled across this little guy...

Which is a DEAD ringer for this greeblie found on one of the Hoth Command Center cabinets

We're pretty excited! :)

OK Wavey... what do you think?

Absolutely spot on with the 2nd greeblie, an excellent find!!! I was looking for that a few weeks ago as I think it turns up somewhere else. It would be great if it leads on to finding a few of the remaining parts. Top marks!!!

It was a total shot in the dark find! Jessie looked at the cockpit greeblie and said "typewriter"... next thing we knew - BAM. There it was.

I agree, I think that guy pops up in a few other places as well. We're still looking! :)

An idea for the arm-rest lever greeblie / busbar was an oversized A1 dot-matrix printer rail - so it follows a pattern....

No lol, it stayed in the ideas bank as I started on some other old prop hunt, but it's still on the list.

Gotcha! I think it will just be a matter of time before we actually stumble across everything... It might take 30 or 40 years ;)

Hi y'all. Long time lurker, first time poster.

Sofa - this entire project is so incredibly awesome it makes me wish I lived nearby, which officially makes this the first time I've ever wished I lived in Alabama. ;)

It occurs to me that the size of the keyboard part might mean it's from an adding machine or maybe a stenography machine, as opposed to a typewriter. They also have a tremendous number of parts, which might make them extra-desirable to a greeblie-maker on set.

Hi Gang,

Fastest UPDATE EVER!

I had several other projects going on yesterday and I was only able to sand, prime and add more filler to the nose panel boxes

But Daniel did get this guy printed! I can't wait to show you this!

I know... I was exhausted too after reading this update. I had to go rest....

I have a busy morning but should have some updates this afternoon! :)

Hi BBD,

Thank you so much and let's officially welcome you to RPF! Yeah... I was cautious my first time coming to AL. ;) But I love it now.

After looking through some of the typewriter parts on ebay (steampunk fans would/should go nuts!) I couldn't get over how many different working parts there were let alone finding the Hoth cabinet greeblie. The trouble with finding/identifying all these greeblies... they literally used anything and everything from PVC, to telephone parts, to aircraft, automobile, typewriter to washing machines... I'll definitely check out the adding & steno machines.

We have a photo of one greeblie with an actual manufacturers code clearly written on the side - we still can't figure out what it is! It's horribly frustrating! But this is the hobby we've chosen. ;)

Thank you again for the kind words. Do you have any plans for a build?

Hi Gang,

Well... after a disastrous start to the weekend I took a few steps back, focused myself and pushed forward. A good portion of the weekend was spent cleaning the garage in prep for some awesomeness! OH... I was able to get a few things done on the project!

But first... :)

More holes to be cut for LEDs

More greeblie placement - unlike the original prop, if we're designing greeblies, we have to design each one to actually mount to the panel - not just adhere with super glue. That's the ONLY sure way the part/greeblie will stay in place and not fall off during transport, handling, etc... So... Marking out holes

I LOVE how this greeblie turned out but I accidently adhered all the layers together... Many of the parts are different colors... UGH

So I tried to tape the sections off

For the past several MANY months me and a buddy have been helping a co-worker get her home prepped for sale. Almost every weekend was spent renovating - we're exhausted. We finally finished and, aside from a happy homeowner, partial payment resulted in my spending most of Saturday and early Sun morning cleaning the garage so I could make room for a few new toys!

WHEW... ;)

That's so awesome of you helping someone in need. And Toys are certainly AWESOME!

the progress is looking great, how you have time to work, renovate a friends house, and make progress is baffling!

Thanks! It was a lot of fun watching the transition during the renovation. There wasn't anything we didn't do/touch - cabinets, floors, ceiling, paint, bathrooms, etc etc etc... But we're both exhausted and thrilled to finally be finished.

The new toys... OH... I'm so happy. :)

The forward progress was minimal this weekend but any forward progress is good progress.

Mmmhh...new toys! Lovely update Sofa, lovely once more:cool Keep up the great work, you've the patience of a saint.

Plans, yes. Time and space, no.

Hi Gang,

Not much of an update this morning. Took the night off to rest and relax.

Taped off part of this greeblie

Not a bad result...

I still think it can better...

Next up... get a few more LED panels out of the way so I can start mounting all those greeblies!

Stay Tuned!

Hi Joe!

Thanks so much! I don't know whether it's patience, exhaustion or pure insanity. As long we're headed in the right direction who am I to question why, right? ;)

Amen... I completely understand. :)

Hey Sofa.

So this may not be the proper place to post this, since your build is (at least for now ) limited to the cockpit, but I know from following you guys that you have a broader goal of some day identifying all of the greeblies in the Falcon. I was watching this scene from Empire and noticed those silver oxygen canister looking objects from which Luke is breathing ... don't know if those have been ID'd yet but they look a lot like the silver glass liner from my vintage thermos ... maybe a slightly different shape, but could they be liners from some other thermos? Or perhaps they are metal and something else all together. Just figured I'd throw it out there.
