1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Calling ALL MOLD/CASTING MAKERS! Need some help/guidance/advice! :) Please PM me if you want to help out! :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Replacing and backlighting the square tiles? Hey, now that will be quite a project, but I think the end result will be gorgeous, and worth it!!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

I can only cast small objects, nothing bigger than deck of cards. I don't have the skill or facilities for anything bigger. If it fits in one hand, and doesn't protrude beyond your semi-curled fingers, I can try casting it.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

How many times have you flipped all of the switches back and forth?? Some people have "red-button-pushing" disease. I have the "toggle-switch-flippin" disease :lol "Can't.... resist.... must.... flip..... switches...."

Me too! :lol

Just imagine if all those switches were static casts? They'd be breaking all the time! ;)

I took that into consideration... Canobi was ready to cast all 2,398,317 switches but it was decided to go with a functional switch... it just adds to the fun! :)

I have to admit... that even with the panels resting against the wall... I find myself "flipping out"... :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hey SofaKing01,

Where does that panel go, or is it to be parted out? Sorry, I just don't know.

Dan S

Hi Dan,

The panel would be parted out. I was looking at the vertical gauges. 6 gauges for under 200 along with other misc greeblies is an GREAT deal! I just need to find out how big the gauges are. Hope this helps. :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

That's a nice panel Greg, are ya gonna cut it up ta place it where ya want it?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Starkiller's 3D printed slider / panel knobs arrived! Starkiller had Shapeways "polish" them - something we didn't do on the other 3D printed parts. While the edges are very smooth the tops are not. I have a lot of sanding to do on the tops before casting...

As you can see, Starkiller even added the indent for the black dot! :)

You can see how rough the tops are...

If I can't find any of the 120 PIN edge connectors, I'll ask Starkiller to make a quick 3D object for printing

The black line (pin striping) is actually hollowed out in the edge connector - that allowed for a backlight. YES... I would really like to backlight these as well!

This is a 56 PIN connector, but this gives you an idea of what the original looks like - and they were green

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

I can see where you was going with the GS overhead panel gauges, tricky cos they do look good but I rekon a closer looking readout display can be got - hopefully quite cheaply too. They are almost like the insides of a Plessey style connector block but I think could be made up from smaller squared card-edge connectors. Still looking out for them but they would be very easy to make.

Hi SofaKing,

There is a neat little trick around to smooth out your 3D prints:

One of my friends tried it and it works really great, timing is everything btw. Don't keep it in to long.

Cheers, Michel

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Woke up a little early this morning and had some time to fill the slider/console knobs with resin. As with the throttle greeblies, this will make them more solid and allow me to make molds. :)

I mixed up a little fiberglass resin and filled away...

As the resin began to cure I was able to see how much I needed to shave off to make the bottoms smooth

A little too much resin here

As the resin cured I was able to use a knife a shave off the excess (you don't have a whole of time with resin) - this makes it a little easier to sand smooth (less work is always better ;)

I was hoping to use the vertical gauges. The seller never got back to me and the auction ended - kind frustrating. It would have been VERY Cool, depending on their size, to use the gauges especially if they were illuminated!

If only I had that kind of space! Can not wait to see how this turns out!

Hi A,

You and me both... Next to all the rain and other various projects, I've been slacking on getting anything done. I was really hoping to have at least an outline of the front window cut... But life always seems to get us side tracked... Stay tuned for more! :)

I was able to find a 120 pin connector in green but the seller wanted 10 a piece for them. I should have bought one and then made molds... ugh... Now I can't find the seller at all... lol But... They're out there somewhere!

Hi M,

Thanks for the great tip! Will this work with the powder printed objects?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Probably not.. normally they only use it on the in plastic printed objects. I could ask if something can be done to powder printed objects. We have a printer at the fablab over here. I'll let you know :)

UPDATE:
I just asked: Unfortunately you can't do that to powder printed objects.. Only thing you can do is bondo and sanding.. Sorry to get your hopes up.

That's what I figured... dang... would have been nice to have a few shortcuts. A little elbow grease never hurt anybody. :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Shortcuts are nice :) But it is as you say, just get into it and sand the *** out of those rockerswitches ;)
