1:1 Millennium Falcon Cockpit Replica - Group Build

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

With the floor, why dont you use lino (industrial stength)adhered to the ply, it won't scratch esily nd scuff should rub off. If you use contact clue it is easy to stick down.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

I am thinking a stain with paint finish would represent the actual prop's finish for your needs. Assuming the prop floor was just painted wood, the only flooring finish shots I can think of is when our heros pop up out of the smuggling compartments and when Ford is in that maintence access pit.

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Regarding the foam question, most of those pool floats are made from EPE, expanded polyethylene. There is another foam EVA, ethylene-vinyl acetate which is considered to be stronger and more tear resistant than EPE. Are you thinking of having the foam exposed or to use it as padding with a vinyl covering, sort of like a car interior application?

Hi Oldman,

I'm not sure what the best option is. If the foam is exposed, that will lead to tearing, wear, stain, etc... which is actually perfect! It has to have that lived in look. But I don't think I would cover it with vinyl.

I've been doing a little research and I've found that pool floats are usually "closed cell"... I figure a hearty 1/2 inch pad adhered to a MDF or ply panel should do just just fine.

Opinions?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

I'm going to look into the aluminum panel and see what that costs

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

for the door padding are you trying to do something like what elevation DD and detail K show? This drawing seems to show the padding as being thicker than 1/2". How much of the doorway will you be replicating?

I'm going to create the entire door. Will I create front and back - probably not - I don't anybody knows what the backside of the door looks like. I know it WILL have to slide open / close in order for folks to get in and sit - which is the right thing to do. A swing door would be silly and not look right.

The wood frame is approx 4 inches wide/deep so the "padding" will at least reflect that measurement. But I would rather build a sturdy MDF/Ply base then adhere a thin layer of foam on all exposed sides. I've got several ideas bouncing around in my head... I'll post pics of my ideas this weekend. :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi G, was there any success finding the two handles with the spinners on that sit on the console?

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

I put together a sketch of the doorway trim based upon the 20 Century Fox drawing and making some guesses about the dimensions. Not sure if this is the way you want to go. Funny thing was I took your panel construction dimensions and the doorway detail shown on the studio drawings and it all overlayed each other, only 1/16" of error.

I couldn't find anything at all! But I did notice (if you didn't already see) they were the same as the handles used in the ATAT cockpit! WHOA!!! I just noticed - it's a 3 prong handle... Interesting!!!!

1/16 of an error? That settles it... I have to start over again! ;)

Thanks so much for the drawing you put together! This will really help me when I finally get to that point. The door and frame will be a completely separate piece from the cockpit walls. Since this will be traveling to different shows, the cockpit must be broken down. I'd like to create a door frame that simple slides / mounts into place and then create a simple sliding door. Again... I'm still tinkering with the ideas in my head. :)

Thanks again for the GREAT drawing - save and PRINT!

W,

Check this out! Do you think these are same parts from ANH? Look just below the throttle levers - they are black

I wonder????? Something else I just noticed... you can clearly see the wood grain of the panel JUST to the right of the middle of the throttle levers... :)

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

Well... I'm going to take a different approach to building these upper side walls. What's happening is that the wood is not 100% straight and is flexing / warping against itself by the time I try to skin the frame. So, I'm going to build the frame and bolt it to the other panels as I go. This "should" ensure a near perfect fit and hopefully keep the panels from flexing too much... I hope!

Hi Gang,

I have been absolutely swamped with work projects that I had little to NO time to work on the project this weekend. UGH... Oh well... I did manage to take a few beauty shots and I'm going to try to get back out and accomplish something!

Re: 1:1 Millennium Falcon Console Replica

Hi Gang,

FINALLY!!! I was able to finish those horrible upper side panels... I also added a brace to the back side so when I remove it from the frame and attempt to skin the panel - it won't flex! So far so good!

Both sides are now framed and awaiting a skin! :)

Let's hope for good weather all week so I can get these panels finished and then get started on either the canopy or the ESB side wall extensions?????

Hi YellowJacket,

Thank you so much for the kind words! These side panels were going to be the death of me... Let's keep our fingers crossed and hope for success!
