1:1 'Ghost' Of ObiWan Kenobi...

Man, lets not a beat a dead horse. Comparing a 3D sculpture to 80's movie special effects is pretty nuts. I think the piece looks great as is, it adds more than the character did in the film. Rather than a flat piece of film, this is a 3D bust.

Everyone has their preferences for what they like or what they think best 'represents' a character etc..
I don't have a problem with people liking pieces for different reasons then myself. Different strokes and all.
I even said (I think 3 times now) that I liked this bust, but for different reasons.

But don't argue with me about what looks more like what you see in the actual movie unless you like being wrong.

The thread title is "Ghost of obi wan" not "clear obi wan bust" and I was merely commenting what it would take to achieve a look that is closer to what you see in the actual film.

You can disagree with me all day about what you prefer but not about what is more film correct.

Clear busts look more like something from The Abyss than the ghosts you see on-screen in the SW films.

Judging by the picture posted with obiwan from the movie, I think in this case its more a fact of obiwan was slightly transluscent in the face but very little, if you paint with opaque colors, you lose the whole effect and would end up with with zombie looking obiwan. In that fact alone I think this has to be cast in clear/tinted resin. I don't think this issue is a matter of accurate or not more than what is more practical for this rendition. Its all personal preference. I would take a clear one over opaque one but thats just me. if you want accurate, print it one an overhead projector sheet and project it on your wall.

Actually, now that I think about it, I think the closest you could get in real life to what you see on screen would be a thin rotocast plastic bust painted in color with a blue & white light combo on the inside.
Think of the hollow plastic Santa Claus light up decorations but with a really good paint job.
This way you would still see the skin tones etc.. but it would have a slight blue glow.
Again, you lose the transparency, but it would look more like what is in the movie than anything glass/crystal like.


Like this, but with a much better paint job and blue & white interior lights.

To paint it from the outside, how about adding a little paint to clear varnish.
So you have a clear paint thats tinted with whatever colour you add.

I'm not sure if this would work with the colours you would need to add though.

I dont think anyone doubts Howards abilitiy to mimic something from the screen, which he could with this in an instant since we've all seen his work and know it as TopNotch. However, I may be misreading the original thread post but I believe he was just using this as a test to show the capabilites of the resin he is using with the Crystal Skulls.

Not a big thread about whos better than who by pointing out the accuracies or not.

Well if you go back and read my first post, I was just making an observation and suggesting another possible approach to finish a bust up in a way that is more like what we see on screen.

Wouldn't watercolors give it a bit of a washed out, semi transparent coloring?

I would try and add some colour if it was mine. Even if it was just a light dustung with an airbrush on the inside.

Will this resin stay clear though? Every clear resin casting i've seen always turns a brown colour after a while.

What's all the arguing about? I think H was just doing a test casting with the Crystal skull resin and used the Obi-wan.

I would love to see this lightly painted with translucent paint though. We all know ghosts are transparent.

The obvious solution is to cast one with a Plutonium core. The glow will take care of itself.



Howard, I think it's fantastic. The Hasbro toys have somewhat established the premise of the Clear Blue Glowie Ghost, and everyone knows what it's supposed to be - just like your creation.

It would be neat to see one with some translucent/transparent paint though

I wonder how painting it like a regular bust, but them hollowing out the inside a bit and sticking a light in there would look...

But I think its fantastic as is. Just like all the ghost/hologram figs.

While I agree, you can't always make a perfect copy in the real world of something that was done with special effects, I think the primary thing that makes it look like a ghost (in the shots such as this one) is the transparent part - without being able to see through him it would lose what makes it a ghost - so for me the just paint will not work. I can clearly see through these characters, maybe less in the head then the body (so they would show up better on film) but it really is what makes them a ghost.
I think this is fantastic, and for me, the closest to this type of thing anyone can get in the real word.

How are you going to 'ghost' the robes? If anyone did try to make it look like the real deal, it's just going to look like a disembodied head. Here's what you could do, put it in a black box and project an image of obi-wan on it. Then it could talk to you too! :lol

Lookin cool. Use some transparent colors and just thinly paint the details on the bust. Hasbro did one figure this way and it looked fine. I love it just the way it is now, but I'd still like to see some transparent colors applied just for the heck of it.
