“There and Back Again; A Mystery Chunk Tale”

It’s worth whatever someone is willing to pay. I’ve sold a few and it’s been at cost for that pair of boot / 46. I’ve seen others at other prices also.

Since the reveal, the auction I was winning has now doubled in price. Prices are and will go up. Can’t give you a price because there is a range. Some boots were $35 and some were $300. I haven’t paid more than $250 shipped to my door. Also depends on quality of the boots. Now apparently over $400 and rising.

This is exactly what we were trying to avoid. :/

Bryan does explain it but let me speak plainly with some of the summarization of info.

Royal Hunter (e.g. Hunter, e.g. Uniroyal, e.g. Gates) wading/Wellington/wellies with a leather sole and studs made between 1955-1980 are what you want.

Daiwa wading boots also seem to have made use of the same studs (presumably from the same underlying British Royal Warrant to the Heathall factory).

oh my god thank you!!! idk why this is so hard to find... i feel like what you just typed should be pinned.

It seems it would make much more sense to just have some people get a few pair and then distribute the parts. With 46 pieces per pair it wouldn't take that many boots to quickly satisfy the whole population of us crazy people :D

That is what we were trying to do...

cat's out now I guess...

problem is now the bids are already doubling so it is quickly becoming difficult.

It’s a very niche item and there’s only so many people who care about having original parts. I have a feeling a bunch of people will be blowing their wad on expensive boots only to find they have few buyers after the initial demand has been satisfied. That being said, I’m glad I scored my chunk this morning from Wannawanga :) This community is awesome

I am selling my B grades for $8.75 a piece right now... that includes PayPal fees and the pain in the ass to answer messages, the padded envelope cost, the ink and label paper I print with cost... plus shipping to each person. That's what I calculated per my cost of the pair of boots I bought. The A grades I'm saving for friends and any leftovers will be slightly higher than the B's also... the whole point is to cover the cost of the boots plus the other mentioned costs involved in selling/mailing.

I feel stupid for asking - what's the difference between A and B grade? Quality?

yeah. Fidelity of the stud. Given boots are worn and some are mint unworn with studs that never have been trodden on, and some have been worn where the checkering has been worn down...plus the wear pattern of any given boot based on the wearer's walking, the nature of them is such that studs on a worn pair of boots will have differing wear patterns on the chunks.

Price will come back down. It may go up a bit more over the next few weeks, but it will come back to Earth as it becomes clear that this isn't the new graflex. The "I want a real part mystery chunk" population probably isn't much bigger than the weird boot population.

Demand will be huge for the next couple of weeks, then all but vanish.

Remember, most people, even Star Wars fans, don't even know the V2 is a thing. You have to get into the weeds a bit just to find out the difference between V2 and hero. You have to actually go down the rabbit hole a bit to learn that the chunk is even a thing. The number of us who have gone down the hole far enough to want a real parts one just can't be THAT high that we will outnumber what's out there.

I'll say it again...

Cast resin replicas. Please, someone set up a run of cast resin replicas so we can take some pressure off the market for originals!
