Production Made Staff of Ra Headpiece. Got it in hand PICS PAGE 7

Re: Production Made Staff of Ra Headpiece. Thoughts?

Meaning that the Harrisons and Elstree Props have a long and murky history of misrepresentation and fraud when it comes to props and their name is essentially mud in the original prop community.Basically they are not to be trusted. At all.

I understand that Elstree Props has a reputation for misrepresenting props and their lineage. Luke has never represented this as a screen used prop but as a production used. It matches up EXACTLY with the screen used staff of ra that was sold for $60,000. So it is safe to say that it has some good lineage. Would I have paid $1000 for this...no. $450....yep!

I would love to know more about the Harrison's. I have been dealing with Luke the grandson. He is having his grandfather, Norman, pose with the headpiece and type out a letter about this piece's history and his involvement with Raiders.

Thanks for the input.

Re: Production Made Staff of Ra Headpiece. Thoughts?

The ebay headpiece does not match up exactly with the Profiles in History piece on close inspection and there are differences.I am not saying that this piece is not a casting from an original however I think it is unlikely, given some of the finer detail differences and the past history of the Harrisons, that this is an original production piece.
Let me be honest in my opinion here.Elstree Props changed management when Paul sold the business. It is now being run by another owner. Then, all of a sudden,Luke,Paul's son, just happens to have a bunch of this stuff lying about his student flat which he decides to sell. This stuff includes a huge list of the kind of inventory that was regularly listed by the Elstree Props ebay store when ran by Paul.Coincidence?Forgive my cynicism but is it not apparent that Luke is simply an outlet for his father's wares?Luke may well not be aware of the full history of Elstree Props and the fraud associated with them but anybody who decides to deal with them should be.Forewarned is forearmed.
One of the reasons that you see this stuff being auctioned on ebay is that the major auction houses will not accept anything coming from Elstree Props or the harrisons as it is simply too big a liabiliy for them.
If you're happy with your purchase that's great.I just don't think you should be overly confident that you have an original production piece is all.

Re: Production Made Staff of Ra Headpiece. Thoughts?

Brad, has Jason passed judgement on this? You and he are at the top of the list in Raiders experts...

Re: Production Made Staff of Ra Headpiece. Thoughts?

Thanks BBDV.

Not yet Rob.

There are several similarites I've found, besides the feather detail matchin up perfectly. The only item that is not 100% is the "rope" wrap around the egde, which was supposedly done by hand and hard to cast perfect. I would be hard pressed to find that this is not the same headpiece as the Profiles HP. Too many similarities

Brad

I've looked into this guy before. He's in my home town. He was ebaying stuff that came from Elstree Props old website. Again given to him by his grandfather. I don't dispute he might be related but as Niall says there are so many red flags with Esltree that it makes anything that comes from them with a back story is dubious.

All I *think* you have is a copy made in their workshop. Elstree were also selling Star Wars "crew gifts" at one point consisting of metal figurines. Adding the "crew gifts" gave them some kind of legitamacy when infact they were nothing to do with the production process or Star Wars. Think the same applies here.

You really have to ask yourself why something like this is not handled by a major auction house really. He's based in the UK so would have a couple of options.

I recall Jason over on the original prop blog did a very good piece on Esltree.

Re: Production Made Staff of Ra Headpiece. Thoughts?

Thanks again guys,
Yeah I agree about why not put this piece at an auction house. Seems strange. Who knows. Maybe it is a copy maybe he thought he would get the same money from Ebay? I will ask him this once I get the piece.

What I do know is that a piece very similar if not identical sold for over $2500. And the detail of this piece is unmatched so far. So, no matter what I am very happy with the price. It would just be icing on the cake if this was a true production made piece. But I am not deluding myself to think that, just hoping.

It's a nice looking piece Brad i have no clue what replicas of this piece sell for if $450 is a good price for an accurate replica then i guess you can't lose.
I would shy away from comparing past sale prices though look at the Mr Predicta buckle fiasco recently, when people thought they were original parts some poor soul paid the heavy end of $700 for one, soon as they were outed as replicas and advertised as such they failed to sell one for $200.

Well basically the best replica (Fan Sculpted) headpieces are: RedFour, Acme Magico and Magnoli. None of these are available anymore but they sell for:

RedFour: $250-$400 depending on if it is the solid bronze version
Acme Magico: $300 +/-
Magnoli: $250-$325 depending on it it is the solid bronze version

Of these, none of them are matched to any production HP's

You can buy the Acme Artifacts Headpiece for $100 which I have 2 of. They seem to be recasts of the Acme Magico HP with muted details, but it is the ONLY decent fan sculpted HP available.

So the $450 is right inline for this HP since it seems that it DOES have lineage to a production HP as I see too many similarities to the Profiles $60K HP.

Again, I have NOT seen ElstreeProps selling ANY Staff of Ra HP's. EVER. Interesting that they would wait so long to list these. That is the only solice I am taking in this deal about it's authenticity.

So, no matter what I am very happy with the price.

This, to me, is the defining statement. You're happy with the price, the buyer is happy with the price.

Done deal.

Re: Production Made Staff of Ra Headpiece. Thoughts?

Okay, so this is a pretty cool update. I had asked Luke to take a pic of Norman Harrison holding this Headpiece. I asked if he could do it next to the original Ark "Cherubs" that he owns still owns. Notice the thumbs and thicker torso area on the angels! Those are tell tale signs of the originals. Here is the e-mail and pics:

hi brad, heres the pics of your actual headpiece being held by Norman Harrison in is front room, next to the bronze angels :) Got the letter too, he wrote a bit, typed most of it, its on his old Norank letterheaded paper as well. Hope you like it and look after it. He doesnt like it when people sell things on for profit like dealers though, the letter is for you only he says. Cheers, Luke

EDIT: I have reduced the size of these pics and added the watermark to protect against reproduction (Thanks Kevjh for the heads up)
