Star Wars: The Force Awakens (Pre-release)

Exactly!!!! I would prefer well composed digital shots to this run of the mill cloverfield stuff anyway.

My only need for this movie is that it fits in to the style of the other six films. I fear that he will bedazzle this with his trademark style.

The more they say "return to practical effects" the more it sounds like they equate that with it being a quality story.

The great thing about star wars is that it isn't an adaptation. this isn't a superhero movie where they can just reboot. But that does mean you have to take the story seriously. And yes, to me the prequels and the clone wars are just as important as the original trilogy.

You guys really think Lawrence Kasdan is going to let a less than quality story slip by his hands. JJ isn't the only person involved. It's a group of very talented people that all know this movie needs to be good for the sake of future movies. From what I've seen so far it's utmost care and passion to make this great. It's not just JJ's movie but I have faith that he will do justice leading the project.

All of this effort to bring back practical effects, sets, etc. only for it to be undone by shaky-cam, lens flare, weird close-ups and angles, among a host of other tricks they will use in an attempt to "modernize" the filming style. In the future, it will look anything but timeless. It's going to look very dated.

I hate to say it, but ANH is looking pretty dated at this point. Maybe not every scene, but between the 70's hair dos and the slow burn 1st half of the movie, even the film look itself seems old, less clean and crisp now.

But while I expect some newer filming conventions, I still imagine we'll see lots of interesting wipes and other familiar bits.

Idk, he had the idea of having Luke put on the Vader helmet at the end of ROTJ and proclaiming himself Vader, and that's the dumbest idea I've ever heard. Even good writers have horrible ideas sometimes.

Oh my gawd. The haters were right! Lens flare! Dammit!

How did you see this cut?

Posts like this remind me they're NEVER going to please everyone. If it's not one thing, it will be another for some people to complain about.

Sideburns & hairstyles don't really date the movie. It could easily be said in the SW Universe at that time they were more of a trend. They weren't a trend 30 plus years before ANH at the time of TPM, just as they weren't yet a trend in the real world in the 1940s.

The only way this movie has any hope of pleasing anyone entirely is if it goes back in time and gets released in 1986. How the hell do you follow a legend like the OT? Having said that, I continue to like what I see.

I don't even know what you guys are watching to get this impression. You talk about it like it's the Blair Witch Project or even the Bourne Identity, but everything I've seen has been extremely controlled, deliberate, beautifully lit and composed cinematography. Most of it has been on rails or on sticks (tripod). There's one dynamic (not shaky-cam) flying shot of the falcon which is simply an update of the kind of things they were attempting with X-wings shots early on but couldn't pull off so impressively with the technology of the time. And did I see someone compare the shooting style of these trailers to what we saw in the PREQUELS? Good lord! That was a bizarrely inconsistent mishmash of every style after the first one. If you're offended by any approach, I guarantee you watched plenty of it in those terrible movies.

The thing is, it's not necessarily that he's changing the style. (I'm talking about that shaky cam falcon porn from the first teaser)
It's that it's probably the most overused an flimsy techniques of modern action movies. It's become a symbol for the awfulness of bayformers. And yes, of star trek.

Those old movies had some great pacing. Who doesn't love those slow moments of downtime aboard the Falcon? Those are the reason that they are so rewatchable. If this is just a sensory explosion like trek, I'll be pretty sad about this. I'll just keep rewatching the clone wars

Seriously? Of course the OT seems tame when you watch it now, it IS dated technology ... Sensory explosion is a phrase I'm sure plenty of viewers would have used to describe the OT in the 70's/80's ... Recall all the audience testimonial of viewers literally ducking and covering their heads as ships flew overhead? Star Wars has always been about pushing the boundaries of visual effects. Do you NOT want Star Wars to grow and develop? Employing "new" filming techniques will not inherently create a tasteless film. In my opinion they are going as old school as could possibly be expected with this one. I am most excited about seeing old school content (props etc.), but am even more excited to see these things in the crisp, dynamic style/detail that modern cinematography and effects can provide! AND don't forget they are shooting on FILM! FILM! FILM!

Seems a bit early in the game to be assuming these are going to show up. It's almost as if some people have this knee-jerk reaction to automatically make these statements anytime J.J. is mentioned.

Just WAIT and SEE... a then we'll see.
