ROTJ Vader light saber

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

LOL...BREATH Chris...BREEEEEEEEEEEATH.......

NOw...must find screws...

WOW!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That's no dueling saber. That's THE ESB/ROTJ Hero prop!!!!
THE saber seen in all those ESB (red background) and ROTJ (white background) publicity stills. It's also the saber Vader wears during the carbon freeze chamber scenes.
I'm amazed it's still around.

We NEED more pics of this!!

This is the best example of a Darth Vader lightsaber ever. Most likely this was one of the original ANH sabers converted for ESB and then used in ROTJ.
It doesn't get any better than this.

The thread discussing this exact saber's use in ROTJ:

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

Well, let me slow this down a little.

Mpp's and even Parks MPP's are pretty common, and all the information to make a Vader ESB saber has been on the web for a few years now.

Just like some people take a brand new piece of furniture and make it an 'antique', anyone with some skill, knowledge, and desire could take an MPP and dress it up to look 30+ years old.

1. Do we have good, clear photographs of the ESB/ROTJ Vader Saber?

2. Are their any identifying marks on the actual screen used saber that we can see in those pics?

3. Can we match-up any of those witness marks to this piece?

4. How long has this saber been on display? Is there any COA? Where did it come from?

5. It seems a little strange to me that a piece of LFL property is on display in a 'museum' in Grantville, Pa and this is the first we are hearing about it. Is it on loan? Does LFL know about it? Can we contact them ? (Chris?)

6. Was this from an auction (Profiles? Christies?), or a private collection?

7. Has anyone in the last 30 years seen this exact Saber? Photos from the Archives? First hand accounts?

8. Was this a fan made piece from maybe 1985 or something that was passed off as screen used and someone believes they have had a screen used piece? We see stuff like this from the Elstree don't we?

Just throwing out some ideas before we over-commit on this.

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

FYI - at least some of the screws are a late ESB or ROTJ additions. Reference is limited, but there is definitely not an upper screw in the grip 3rd from left in the ESB promo shots (red background).

MPP's aren't that uncommon. True. The knowledge to make an ESB repro saber this precise is not common at all. I've seen very few repro sabers that could pass for screen used.

To answer your questions...
1.YES, I do have a couple.
2. YES
3. YES
4. unknown
5. I can contact LFL about this. It's not that rare for a piece to be out of Lucasfilm's hands. Many of the lightsabers are not in the archives.
6.unknown
7. unknown. I have never seen this saber in the archive photos before.
8. No way. Fan made pieces from the 80's are usually very inaccurate. Elstree does like to lie a lot.

The fact that I can answer YES to the first three questions has me very certain that is THE ESB saber. WAY too much stuff lines up for it to be a fake. I would like to see more pics of it to match up even more details.

I'm really stunned to see this saber. It's very exciting! :eek

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

Yep I'm stunned too - can't believe we are actually seeing this again - are you sure the base of this prop isn't a king sol ;)

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

If you look closely at the area under the connector holes you can see the faint oval outline/wear marks of where the Microflash label was.

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

I had always thought the story was the ESB hero was around at the beginning of filming but went missing and a Graflex was pressed into duty to finish filming. If it is true the MPP was 'lost' then it might be hard for there to be a COA if this indeed the real deal.

Awesome find if this does turn out to be the ESB hero.

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

Well,I never thought there would be all this buzz about the Vader saber.:eek
Truth be told, I work at the Casino, In the museum.
I will try and get more info on this piece. I can contact the crew that set up the display.
Unfortunately, the saber is mounted to the poster, sealed in a frame.
It was real hard to photgraph, because of the reflections on the glass, etc.
I will try to get better pics, let me know what you need.
:)

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

It looks like the same saber that was in the Seattle Musuem of Science fiction. the graflex they had with it did not look legit. It could be a different saber tho.

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

I have a Nikon cool pix digital, filters don't fit.
If it is mis-labeled, maybe I can get the museum crew to "Change" the display..put the correct placard, etc. with it.

Just a thought.

Incidentally, the museum is not open to the public just yet.

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

I'd love to know the backstory on how the museum got the piece. What auction it came from etc.

I wish we could see the other side of it.
A nice shot of the bottom would be cool to see what MPP variation this is.

A taste of why I'm so excited about this saber turning up...

ESB Hero prop on left

There are several other details that line up as well like the ways the wires are crimped and some of the shroud chips. I'd like to see more pics to do a more thorough comparison.
This is the saber most seen in ESB (both movie and publicity stills). It was used at least during ROTJ publicity if not in the movie itself. This saber may even be the Vader ANH saber with the black sidebars (Vader ANH V2).

Most "stories" we hear these days are just theories fans came up with (ie Vader saber stolen so they converted a Graflex for ROTJ). We label sabers this movie or that based on features and looks of the prop. All three movies used several saber props per character, many we haven't even seen yet. Calling the Vader graflex "THE" ROTJ saber is a fan simplification. Truth is we have no solid evidence when and where it was used. Just a few blurry screencaps and the knowledge that it is authentic because it came from the LFL archives.

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

Well, Ti-el_terall, I'd say that this is not the saber that was on display in Seattle at the Sci-fi museum. I live pretty close, and went through there a number of times - taking a good long look at some of the stuff that particularly interested me, such as most of the SW stuff. I wouldn't even joke at claiming to be a Vader expert, but I'd say that it wasn't the same saber. It's been a while since I was there also, but I think that one may still be on display there anyways...

Well, that nice little side-by-side comparison pic looks like this saber has been nailed... Or screwed, if you were... Identified in any case.:)

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

No, the saber at the Sci Fi museum was the MR ESB saber.

Thanks for sharing that real saber pic! I have studied this saber alot for my own display....it'd be great to see more shots of it.

I dont see any screw heads on the pic on the left. Not discounting that it IS THEE ESB/ROTJ saber. Personallly I beleive it is. I find it interesting that, they would have been added later. But why?

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

The telling thing about those two pictures are the marks on the black band. They match up almost perfectly, which would be a hard thing to replicate I'd think with the info that existed at the time.

Re: ROTJ Vader light sabre

Didn't Elstree have a supposed "screen used" Vader saber with the ROTJ background mounted behind it for sale a few years ago?

(or was it the luke rotj?)
