Hi Gang,
A Merry Christmas to All! I hope everybody is having a wonderful holiday season and you have been able to share time with family, friends and loved ones! Can you believe 2017 is coming to a close?
Time for the end of the weekend update! This is the last post of 2017! Let's start with all the 3D printing. The nav chair head piece and greeblies are getting close!
Backside
Cant wait to see this guy all finished up and smooth!
Still have to print the top part of the head piece - this is proving VERY difficult because of the shape
The nav chair side greeblies
Printing another part
Finished!
All 3 of these pieces temp taped together
Tough to see
As much as I like 3D printing... there is SO MUCH filling and sanding to so with these home 3D printers. It really takes an effort to get them smooth. I'm looking at getting a higher end 3D printer
1st round of sanding
Primer! Now we find and see all the errors
Yuck!
Had to laser cut this donut
To replace this birds nest of a 3D print
The donut will fit / cover this area
UGH... printer clogged up
Since the pads were a complete bust we decided to laser cut and 3D print a new pad. We'll then take molds from this master buck
Oh joy... more sanding!
2nd round of sanding and filling
The capstone got a new trim piece!
I pulled the bottom down a bit so I added these simple details to fill in the empty space
Primer - this is as far as I got with this piece
Let's move to the maintenance console... I finally boxed in these panels that appeared to be floating - I hated that look!
Laser cut the first of 3 pieces
Sanded the edges flat
Filler
Front panel
Filler
Lots of filler
First round sanded smooth
Now the panels have nice flush look to them
Love it!
Paint
YUCK! Need to fix that area
Looks like an actual console now
Makes all the difference in the world
Upper panel gets the same treatment - and a new design!
New panel being designed - this was tough! I had to work with the existing opening
Interior sides
Perfect fit - didn't have much room to play!
Making the interior edges smooth
Primer
The upper panel is getting a complete make-over! Enjoy!
Sandwiching all the pieces together
What the heck is this?
Edges being adhered to the new trim plate
Front side
Perfect fit!
This is the new face plate
Mounts to the back of the edge piece
Lets put everything together (the MDF piece went through a few modifications to make it all work)
Main panel
It still fits!
Black!
Daniel had the idea to light the clear acrylic from the sides. It was a tight fit so we etched 2 small circles into the back side of the acrylic
Laser cut a new housing with 2 sister holes for white LEDs to mount
Added reflective tape to the top beauty trim piece
LEDs in place! Note how just the edges are illuminated!
Face plate with pinstripes and new illuminated greeblie
Note the holes behind the clear acrylic
Temp in place
I then painted the new greeblie housing Satin Granite
The back of the panel showing the wiring diagram
I had to laser cut a few stand offs
LED
Almost finished up!
We finally got the tablet working
Note the red LEDs behind the new clear acrylic greeblie - these will have a flash pattern
And finally... I laser cut this piece
HMMMMM
Let commit... drilled the corner holes
A new access port! And a slightly new design from the one above
Do I use this greeblie?
Or this greeblie?
Designed a housing that would mount on the interior side of the new opening
I wanted to see what this guy would look like
WHOA! Thats very blue!
Added some pinstripes
Painted the exterior plate
Silver
Painted the interior edges
HMMMMM
Wasn't working for me
Back to this guy!
I like it!
It's missing something...
It needs a friend
It needs something else - designed and laser cut a new housing
The red acrylic will be back lit but I didn't like the circle at all
YES! Much better
Primed the face plate
Note how the silver greeblie sits a bit more recessed into the panel
Redesigned these new mounting plates
New main mounting plate - note all the holes for some LEDs!
From the back
I've got a few minutes... lets test this thing!
Front side showing the LEDs
Its beginning to look a lot like Christmas... OH wait... that was yesterday!
LOVE IT!
And that's where we are! Not sure why but 5-10 pics are gone... oh well...
Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to All! Be safe and enjoy the New Year! Let's make 2018 awesome! Love you guys & gals!
