Zack Snyder to direct Superman reboot

I have always wanted to see the death story with Doomsday. But fanboys cringe over that character. Probably because those comics saw everybody, not just basement dwellers buy them. God forbid something you like become popular.:rolleyes

That is one powerful story, like it or not.

I'm a little terrified on how this is going to pan out.
Honestly, I think the only kind of Superman movie a modern audience is going to accept is something really violent, with enough action to keep people on the edge of their seats...and to me, the best way to re-introduce Superman to a modern audience is to kill him off!
That's right, The Death of Superman has been BEGGING to be made into a movie adaptatin since the 90's and I strongly feel an all-out brawl between the Man of Steel and Doomsday would make for one helluva action movie!
Unlike the direct to video animated feature, I would feel that a live-action Death of Superman flick would have to end exactly the way the infamous Superman #75 ended, with Lois Lane holding Superman in her arms in his 'last' moments.
A sequel or two would build to his return of course, but like the animated movie, the business regarding the imposter 'supermen' would have to me either modified heavily or ommited completely (remember, what works and makes sense in a comic book seldom works and makes sense in the real world).
Any thoughts?

I can't agree that it has to be extremely violent. Action packed, yes. But I don't think it needs to be violent.

Look at the first two X-Men movies or Spiderman movies. Action packed... not what I'd call violent.

And Superman has always been pretty action packed.

I don't think that killing him off is the way to introduce a new audience to him. First you have to make the audience care about him. Why would they want to come back for more if they're not vested in the character.

No, my bad. Serves me right for being such a trusting soul.

Of course, my suddenly not-so-reliable friend at Warner now SWEARS she told me Zach Snyder was the one about to be announced as the director of the Supes reboot (or re-imagining, or whatever the hell they're calling it).

Now, we had tossed down a couple martinis by that point in the conversation (okay three martinis), but I KNOW she said Aronofsky.

I was set up, I tells ya!

:lol
That's what drinking does to you. :)

I really don't get Hollywood. They HATE everything somebody else ever did and try to change as much as possible so they can pretend they are creative people, but it seems there is a tiny virtual Donner in everybody's head when it comes to Superman movies.

Can we please lose the crystals, Marlon Brando, Zod etc and move on ? Not to knock the Reeves movies (which are still cool btw), but I'd like to see a completely fresh take on Superman, not another zealous homage to Donner.

They should have done a Batman Begins type villians. Introduce new villians never before seen (not counting Smallville) and then you can add familiar faces in the sequel(s)

All this talk about Supes makes me realize how much I don't know about the character. Does DC have a place to read their comics online like Marvel? Everything I know about the Man of Steel comes from the movies. I'd like to broaden my outlook. Thanks,

John

I am very unimpressed they are going with Zod! We have had that..now we have an opportunity for Darkseid, Metallo, Brainiac, Bizarro or even Doomsday..but instead we will get a remake of Superman II. It will always be compared to that film. If a reboot is necessary I wanted to see it bring to life an over the top huge bada$$ villain..not Zod again.

Superman Returns was like a remake of Superman the Movie..so now the next film will remake Superman II. Very creative Hollywood!

I gotta agree. I want to see Brainiac done and done right for once.

I'd like to see Lex Luthor done right too. Don't get me wrong, the first Superman movie is one of my absolute, all-time favorite films but I prefer Lex as the evil genius/corporate CEO type of character whose power is in his nearly limitless financial resources and ability to dodge the law... not the bumbling real estate monger.

That's what I liked about the Superman/Lex mythos. The only thing stopping Superman from putting Lex away was Superman's own unwillingness to break the law in order to do it.

I'd like to see a Superman movie that somewhat emulates what Smallville did but better. You could have Lex play nice to ingratiate himself with Superman and then wait until the second or third sequel to really pit Superman against Lex full force... just on a shorter, more plausible time frame that what they dragged out for years on Smallville.

The first couple of movies should focus on villains that haven't been run into the ground already though... Brainiac, Bizarro, Metallo, etc.

zod would be fun.
there's three to choose from.
General Zod (comic book character)

i hope the go with the russian zod. this article didnt mention he changed his face to look like supermans, thats nuts. you'll have an earth born threat to superman and earth, and face off.

even if they go with regular zod, he has a son that clark later adopts.

I am a huge Superman fan, but I really don't want to see Metallo or Darkseid or anything like that. To me, that's like the B list villains. Even though we're dealing with an alien from another planet, if you start bringing in stuff like that it takes Superman to an "unrealistic" place. Even though I would wanna see Doomsday, I have to admit that it would do the same thing.

You may be able to get away with Brainiac and keep it "real". Zod, Lex and Brainiac would be the 3 for a trilogy that I would use.

I've always wanted some pretty serious Superman films, though I am open to some big fun ones if it can be done right.

Just please, don't go too "dark" because that's not who Superman is.

This is just my thoughts of course but it seems to me a Superman movie could be somewhat "dark" without making Superman into a "dark" character.

I think the contrast of putting the "big blue boyscout" into a reasonably dark situation would be interesting to see how someone with a very high moral code deals with it. I think that's where the real drama in the character lies - the guy that could declare himself "king of the world" yet he prefers to help folks in need, stop bad guys and, yes, even "save" a cat from a tree for a little girl like the scene in the first film.

Just my two cents of course...

A bunch of you guys already mentioned him, but I'm convinced that with modern special effects they could do a great job with a Bizzarro or even Mytzylplykt (show me the correct spelling I dare ya) storyline. Plus they could have fun with a Bizzarro storyline and wouldn't neccesarily have to be all heavy and dark all the time.

This is the same problem I've got with Batman, they keep coming out with these movies and only doing stories with the greatest hits bad guys, blowing their wad up front in stead of doing a couple films with some of their more normal average bad guys and building to a show down with an arch nemesis. Are we doomed to 50 Superman movies versus Lex Luthor and 100 batman movies versus The Joker?

you mean mr.mxyzptlk? i knew it and didnt have to look it up. its pronounced "mixes-pittle-ick" on smallville, i prefer "mixes-pit-lick"

i think they need to get a better footing on the superman mythos before they introduce a character not everyone is familiar with dealing with 5th dimensional magic that is basically a trickster for superman. if they ever used mr.mxyzptlk for a villain, the best way to make him mass audience is nod to the "whatever happened to the man of tomorrow?" alan moore story. they should intro mr.mxyzptlk as a trickster, and end it like whttmt. i dont think he really fits well into the reeve/donner series, though he debuted on the donner produced superboy show.

btw, there NEEDS to be more seasons of that on dvd. NOW. i miss that show. i miss that period in my life.
