Zack Snyder to direct Superman reboot

Regardless of the direction they go, THIS needs to happen:

Seriously - this is as close to no-brainer casting as I can think... :)

This is just my thoughts of course but it seems to me a Superman movie could be somewhat "dark" without making Superman into a "dark" character.

I think the contrast of putting the "big blue boyscout" into a reasonably dark situation would be interesting to see how someone with a very high moral code deals with it. I think that's where the real drama in the character lies - the guy that could declare himself "king of the world" yet he prefers to help folks in need, stop bad guys and, yes, even "save" a cat from a tree for a little girl like the scene in the first film.

Just my two cents of course...

I am a huge Superman fan, but I really don't want to see Metallo or Darkseid or anything like that. To me, that's like the B list villains. Even though we're dealing with an alien from another planet, if you start bringing in stuff like that it takes Superman to an "unrealistic" place. Even though I would wanna see Doomsday, I have to admit that it would do the same thing.

You may be able to get away with Brainiac and keep it "real". Zod, Lex and Brainiac would be the 3 for a trilogy that I would use.

I've always wanted some pretty serious Superman films, though I am open to some big fun ones if it can be done right.

WHAT?! No Darkseid or Metallo? "B"-List villains??! I am also a big big fan, but I don't understand your point of view, please explain... because there aren't much villains left that are matching Supes and Lex is done to death, I want to see something else. Mongul isn't that interesting enough, Doomsday would be also a stand-alone story, but not fitting to keep the wheel turning...
Mxyzptlk is just a "minor" annoying imp... and Zod... well he's no more.

Leaves Brainiac, which could bring an interesting view on Kryptonian history, which hasn't been shown on screen.

Sorry I don't see Supes here, even in this shop...

NO ZACK SYNDER!!!

Yeah, I mentioned Hamm in another thread. He'd obviously make a great Supes in the Alex Ross tradition.

Unfortunately the most interesting thing Hamm would bring to the role, i.e. his maturity, is the thing that would prevent him from being cast. Given the studio's desire to reboot the franchise they would never go with a "grown-up" in the lead role -- especially given the Man of Steel's immortal nature. These movies take a long time to make, and Hamm is too long in the tooth to make a long term investment in.

Pity, because having a more mature actor in the role would be nice for a change. Instead we'll most likely get another smooth-featured prettyboy with white teeth, tight abs, and questionable acting chops (read: Taylor Lautner).

Considering the target audience, it's probably just as well

Zack is a music video director - it amazes me that Watchmen bombed just about as hard as it could and they're giving him Superman.

If they decide on having Luthor as the villain, I hope they do away with the Hackman style Luthor (which Kevin Spacey was emulating in Returns) and do a dyed-in-the-wool evil Luthor... sans bumbling henchman and irritating female companion. Mitch Pileggi would be perfect for the role.

Okay, to be fair, Watchmens' $185,258,983 BO take was nothing to sneeze at for an R-rated film based on a graphic novel with no big stars and limited mainstream appeal.

Given the violent nature, downbeat plot, and overall complexity of adapting that particular property for a feature venue I'm surprised Watchmen is as watchable as it is. Hell, the opening titles alone are worth the price of admission.

The real question is why anyone thought Watchmen was worth all the legal bills required to acquire the rights. It's like spending $300 million on a remake of Dune... good luck making a profit, let alone a good movie.

Honestly, I don't know who I'd pick to helm a Supes reboot (not that anyone's asking). The guys who might actually pull it off are too smart, or too scared, to go anywhere near it.

agreed on everything said between start to finish here.

I'd like to know your opinion on who could do the job to bring this franchise back.

Absolutely disagree there. There was nothing of Hackman Luthor in Spacey's Luthor... in fact... why make a sequel to the old movie and not keep the tone, style and character portrayals... only Routh seemed to try to match the old movie... everything else was just... DIFFERENT. A complete waste.

Well, Spacey's Luthor was angrier and more vengeful than Hackman's, mainly due to the fact that Spacey's Luthor had been in prison for 5 years prior to the events in Return, but both have similar comedic styles. And both have the same taste in women (Miss Tessmacher/Kitty Kowalski).

Really? Similar? A shapely woman compared to Spacey's stick figure squeeze? Not seeing the similarity at all. Maybe it's because I really don't like Kevin Spacey. He is not funny. While Gene Hackman feels like floating on a cloud and having fun, Spacey is just a black hole of weight and insanity.

Hackman's Luthor was a joy to watch.

Why do we need another Superman. The original with Christopher Reeve is still the best and always will be. These reboots are just pale jokes of the original.

I'd be okay with Routh again. But that costume has got to go. Hated it.

Yeah, I mostly agree... (I still like the movie and I thought Routh was great) I don't HATE the suit but the details bug me, in particular how the suit was "S's" within "S's" within "S's".

The "S" on the belt, the "S" texture on the "S" symbol (and on everything else), the "S" on the heels, the soles of the boots... it was just overkill. "Hey, there's a blank spot - stick an "S" in there!" :rolleyes

I didn't mind the darker red or even the fact that they tried to give the suit some visual texture but there's gotta be a better way to do it.

I think I'm the only person on Earth - or at least the RPF - who's just not that into Christopher Reeve as Superman. Although I'm the right age and I watched all those films on the big screen, Reeve just never felt like Superman or Clark Kent to me. I know that's bordering on blasphemy.

I look at George Reeves' Clark Kent and see the perfect Clark Kent. His Superman maybe not as much, but it was a different era. Brandon Routh wasn't Superman or Kent, he was trying be Christopher Reeve playing Supes/Kent.

Superman Returns just failed on so many levels in my eyes. The implied rape of Lois Lane, the super-stalking. It was just too long and too dark and there was Luthor again with yet another real estate scheme.

All I want from Zack Snyder: make a Superman movie that works. Give us a Superman that looks like Superman (not necessarily Chris Reeve). Give us big and bold, bright and outrageous - give us new and wonderful. Give us the costume we know and love - bright blue, red and yellow. Give us a spunky Lois Lane, nerdy but not bumbling Clark Kent. Make me believe a man can fly - again.

I agree with the above comments. Also, give us an older Superman who looks like he has life experience. Reeve looked more mature than Routh, even though they were about the same ages when playing the character, but I'd really like to see a late 30/early 40 year old play the Man of Steel.

I like to compare it to doctors. I think that most people (in general and from a superficial standpoint) tend to feel more comfortable with a middle-aged physician than one who looks like a 26 year old just out of medical school.
