YAFF - Yet Another 5 Footer Falcon Build

Looks amazing. You're going to put us *traditional builders out of work :lol:

*lack of a better word
I use the word 'Purists', mine is no where near pure.

If I had the skills, time and money (for kits) that you guys have, I would have loved to do it old school.
That's why I decided to use one of the few skills I do have, to do the model - I was actually surprised there was nothing decent out there - my first encounter was the Gambody one, and that was atrocious, didn't even try printing it

I m pretty sure that if ILM would have in that time (70s) access to 3d print (FDM, Resin etc) things would be a little different, Razor Crest prop model is a good example....saved a lot of time for production they were extremmely creative in 70s using Kitbashing technics, but a lot of time was spent, so, now a days replicate Falcon or other SW Studio Scale under Old school process demands lots of time a money (as mentioned by Dazza), luckely Darrin gave us a chance to make feasible replicate that master piece...using 3d printers that we have in place under a affordable cost...for me without such option would be almost impossible....Tks Darrin

If ILM had access to 3D printing technologies in the 1970s, then the Star Wars universe would look vastly different. Kit bashing spaceships together from model tanks and cars is what, to me at least, gives the universe a big sense of its appeal. The vehicles are recognizable, in part, because they're made of recognizable bits. If ILM had been able to run wild with 3D design and 3D printing, we would never have seen a Wankel engine or Panther tank deck used. It would have been just some random shape with no recognizable features. This is assuming they would have even created a physical model. If they had access to 3D design in the 1970s then you'd have to think they would have just rendered the ships instead of filming them.

Sure, the Razor Crest was partially 3d printed, but it was detailed with a collection of digital greeblies that take their cues (and in some cases they're direct copies), of the model kit greeblies used in 1976 out of necessity.

It's one of the reasons I feel that sci-fi vehicles from the 80s and prior look a lot better than the ones in current films. They don't have that 'grounded' feel that physical, kit bashed, models have.

Anyway, just my $0.05 worth. (we don't have pennies anymore)

Resin + Fdm....
