X-Wing Studio Scale Options?

I haven't seen the auction, but an 1/24 x-wing is by definition studio scale.
Whether they used the right parts, etc, I have no idea.

When did this change? Members here have been very adamant that 1/24 might be same scale as studio models, but it’s not studio scale if it doesn’t actually match the studio model details exactly or nearly so. The English teacher in me wants to say the words studio SCALE mean it is the same SIZE, but I’ve been told studio scale is defined as matching details as well. This led to a whole sub-section—the “commercial” subsection, which was prompted by the deagostini MF. It’s the same size as the 32-inch studio model and incredibly accurate, but not enough and people felt the need of somewhere else to put it. (It seems like since that kit is no longer in production need for the subforum is not there anymore but who knows?)

The spirit of this forum places equal importance upon matching details, this is true. And that is the goal of the projects here.
But the term is the term. An X-wing carved out of soap would be studio scale if it's 1/24. But it wouldn't be particularly welcome in this forum.
That's why I specified that I don't know about that particular kit in terms of detail.

"Studio Scale" was coined virtually at the beginning. No one really thought out the implications of what it means at the time. It was just a term used to tag what we were doing. We just wanted to recreate the filming miniatures as they were, and only a little later on did we realized they built them to be about 1:24. They used 1:24 pilot figures. But the same ships were created for other films at different scales. It really means making as close a reproduction as you can to a miniature that was built and used for one of the films.

Heck, they even built an MPC X-Wing for ESB (and probably ROTJ). Are those "Studio Scale"? No one knows. It's not that precise.

So to be clear, something has changed at this website? But Still, even in this thread, people note how the MPC qualifies as studio scale as it was used in ROTJ (in the capacity of an extra). And I think DeAgo threads are still not allowed in this specific forum.

Nothing has changed. What's TECHNICALLY studio scale merely casts a wider net than what the users of this forum prefer to explore. The kind of project the forum's participants like to discuss has not varied much during its tenure.
So back to your auction question: you asked if it's studio scale, and the answer is yes. If your question was would it be something appropriate for this forum, I'd say: TBD. As you point out, the subforum for builds like DeAgo provides a place for such "gray area" projects.

What defines a Commercial Kit? Isn't a resin kit from Salzo, or Niesen or Randy Cooper a Commercial kit? They sell them. That's the definition of "commerce".

I sell the one off of Ebay, I paid for the masters in 2022.
All parts are from original kits/ parts that I had to replace.
I added new R2 and R5 to the kit and landing gear X-Wing.
Here are a few I have done up.

Is yours the one that looks like it has the cannons in separate parts? Like each tube of different diameter is a separate part?

I get the feeling the sellers are being very selective with their language, and also not mentioning which kit it is. I think most of us would like to see Salzo V4 or something. One is priced at $300, buy it now, which strikes me as low.

I purchased one, it is a Captain Cardboard version. The molds are in new hands now and the current owner has cleaned them up.

My package arrived today and the casts seem nice. Definitely some work to do though. I will be starting a build thread in the next couple days.

I never liked the MPC kit. The only positive experience I had was when I was in college in the 90s. I had very little money, but lots of time. I bought one at a show for about $5 and spent months to a year modifying it. The only thing I had to go by where picks in the SW Technical Journal and other pages from that big ILM book from back in those days. I did not so much make it more accurate as make it look better. Sliced up the lower fuselage and reshaped it, shaped the torpedo tubes, added lots of custom details-greeblies, made custom laser cannons from different tubes of copper and aluminum, custom-built the cockpit, custom built the landing gear (I pose almost everything on the ground), and replaced the rear engine portions. A labor of love. But even the over all shape always bothered me. Are there side-by-side comparisons with the (cough-cough) studio scale X-wing with the larger studio scale models? If I had a choice between an MPC X-wing and a similar sized FM or Bandai X-wing, I would not get the MPC. I know the OP asked about SS, but my guess is that he was also thinking about the SIZE of the kit. Once you get down to a (roughly) 48th scale X-wing "for display," as he says, might as well get a high quality model kit of that size.

Not to mention the MPC kit's plastic is so soft that it cannot withstand the opening/closing mechanism the kit uses. I had to literally rebuild the hinge from the center pin all the way out into the wings themselves (a solid block of HDPS epoxied into the "wing blocks"):

I bought one about a year ago and just started putting it together. The resin quality is nice and very little air bubbles at all if any and the $95 3D printed super duper detail cockpits fit in the model with a little trimming of the printed part. The only thing about it and it’s a minor thing is that the aren’t all the sea lab greeblies in the inner engine “wells” I’m completely happy with the kit and it’s totally worth the $300.

So there are 2 scales considered Studio Scale for the X-wing, one which you are speaking of which is 1:24 scale and what most of the resin and now 3D printed models are based off of. The other is a 1:43 scale MPC model which was used in filming on ROTJ. That one is still available to be purchased and is actually the same model used for filming. Thread below for further reading:

Was this the mpc/ertl 1/43 scale model, or just an mpc kit. Or does it matter. What year is the kit. Was it a 78 release, or later.. just curious. I want to get this right. I'm very new to this part of of the hobby, but I Love this stuff. Lol I want something as close to screen accurate as I can get thought. Like every one else. Unfortunately I don't have the pockets for the 1/24 resin kits. At least right now. Pluss I would like to get at least one under my belt before I go big time.
