X-Men First Class Movie Discussion

If they keep the story quality high, there's basically no limit to how many more movies they can make... but it requires the first two and this one's level of writing and directing and editing for it to be worth while. If we get more of X3 and the Wolverine type of thing... the franchise will die pretty quickly. That really should send a signal to the suits in the studio system that it pays to get those things right and not skimp on story, character development and a good director.

Good stories means continued profit possibilities in the future. Bad stories and they shoot themselves in the foot for a quick buck now and nothing later.

So, wait, this is a 20th Cent. Fox production? Not a Marvel Studios thing? Like, is this intended to connect at all with the new Captain America film or Thor or Iron Man or The Incredible Hulk films?

Yeah this is 20th cent fox , so no tie in with the Marvel studio stuff like the avengers. Its also the reason there aint an easter egg after the credits finishing rolling. Im actuall pretty shocked that Fox pulled of a high rate film instead of raping a franchise.

I'll admit, after seeing the posters, and trailers for this film, it was very low on my list of movies I ever wanted to see.

Having said that, I'm glad I went to see this with my wife last night after reading some of the reviews here. I was not dissapointed!

I really enjoyed the casting of characters for the most part, as well as the story. What a pleasant surprise.

Man, I REALLY enjoyed this movie. At first thought, I was a bit put out by the seeming retconning of the whole thing, til I realized X-Men has been tinkered with so many times it isn't even funny. I will definitely be seeing this one again.

Also I agree about the costumes. So tired of motocross suits in black.

So Xavier lost his ability to use his legs towards the end of the movie...then in the beginning of X3 when he was much older he was still able to walk? I'm confused.

That was the cloned body the Shi'ar made for him after they fought The Brood.

...

Wait! I'm not a nerd! I'M NOT!

Larry. You write comic books for a living. I'm afraid that ship has sailed. Don't worry, though, you're in good company here. :)

"Le sigh."

That ****ing kills me.

Brilliant. I'm officially putting that in my personal repertoire.

If only the writers had thought that far in advance. But retconning some minor details in the franchise was well worth what they had to deliver in XFC.

And Sebastian Shaw is one bad mo-fo.

THIS MOVIE ROCKED. I LOVED IT!

I really had fun, enjoyed the plot, thought the actor playing Magneto was incredible and James McAvoy was UNREAL.

LOVED this movie.

I love Magneto's helmet. It looked perfect!!!

I really, really dug this flick. I've never been much of a an X-fan, I read regularly during the Claremont/Byrne era and my interest waned in the early 200's (if not eariler, but I continued to buy).

I forgive them for those first three terrible movies (I didn't see Wolverine, so it was probably four). It was worth the mess that Brian Singer created for this story.

While there's a ton of things to nitpick - the biggest thing that bugged me was the total lack of any charm, charisma, energy or real presence from January Jones' portrayal of Emma Frost. While she wasn't terrible - but as I noted before regarding stills from the flick - she just looked at acted like she'd rather be somewhere else. She wasn't icy in persona - just vacant.

I got chills when Charles got shot.

Saw the trailers...

They sucked.

Saw the posters...

They sucked.

Saw the movie...

AMAZING!

Easily the best X-Men movie to date and one of the better sci-fi films I have seen in a while. What a shame that the marketing for this movie was absolutely abysmal and focused on a few minutes of action instead of the fact that this story had an amazing amount of heart and depth. From the humor to the drama to the action, this movie actually has helped make the other X-Men movies better because I now feel like the characters have some depth and I feel for them instead of just not caring. GREAT movie!

I'm finding this situation hilarious, it seems everyone who saw the trailer/posters/promotional stuff thought this movie was gonna be a huge pile (myself included) and everyone is blown away by it......god I love film.

Saw it yesterday, really liked it! Probably the best X-Men film, but since I've only seen it once, and I've seen the others multiple times which let's you nitpick more, I'll hold off on my ranking.
As far as some of the spoiler discussion that people have posted here:

  • The age of Alex Summers (Havok) in relation to Scott Summers (Cyclops) didn't bother me that much, since so much else has been changed in the timeline of the X-Men (ie: 1st class was originally Cyclops, Beast, Angel (male), Iceman and Ms. Marvel (Jean Grey)). They still could be brothers, though Alex would have to be the older bro now, but it's still technically possible to be brothers even if they might be something like 30 years apart in age. I know it's a stretch, but seeing as how in the comics they were orphaned because their parents were kidnapped by aliens & their father became a swashbuckling space pirate, I think some leeway can be given.
  • The older Charles Xavier seen walking in the Jean Grey flashback in X3 seems like a continuity error, and it probably was, but in the comics, Charles regained the ability to walk at least once back in the 80s through the use of a cloned body, but later became paralyzed again when his spine was crushed on a mission. There could have been something similar that happened in the continuity of the movies. Again, it's a stretch, and not really an excuse for sloppy continuity, but these are comics characters we're dealing with.

It is so often the case that the marketing and hype far exceeds the movie and is so rare for it to be the other way around. I believe the marketing campaign surrounding this movie was a total failure.

I can't help but wonder how many of us loved this movie at least in a small part because our expectations were so unbelievably low. It is truly rare for a movie to surpass my expectations and you can't help but walk out smiling when that happens, even if the movie wasn't perfect.
