X-Men 2 Carphone

Sorry I haven't posted these sooner but I just got back in town yesterday and just took these todays.

This is the first thing I've order from shapeways and honestly I'm impressed. Jay has done a great job on the model and the print is surprisingly smooth and quite durable. I've uploaded a few pics and I'll take more later but I wanted to share these sooner rather than later.

Overall this is a very impressive model and the size feels good. Looking at the screen caps the model appears to be slightly elongated and a tad wider. The overall length seems good but the model is in the closed position, if the length remained the same in the open position I think we'd be good. I think if the X halfs were "squished" down a bit it would be perfect. Also the sides are a little thicker and need to be tapered in a bit. I think once that's done the inner curve will be good. The out curve looks good to me. The black grip pieces on the side also need to be resized, they are a bit longer and also thiner. Lastly ... for now there are only two groves in the ear piece.

Obviously there are missing details but what Jay has here is a very good start.

Again I'll post more later but if anyone has any questions or would like to see a specific angle please let me know.

Wow! That came out looking better than I thought it would. I actually see and agree with TB with all those details that needed to be tweaked. Overall, that's an excellent start! :D
 
Nice one TB:D It came out really nice! Gotta give props to shapeways.

I totally agree too.. Its great to see it in real life and gauge what dimensions need to be tweaked. I was worried it would be too thick on that curve, it's gonna be awkward to change it but i'll get there:).. I'm not sure whether to scale it down or squish it up a bit.

I thought the grooves in the top and bottom were the same.. damn top only being 2!.. mine are a bit wide also, i'll have to fix that.

Im gonna have to buy one just to get the feel of it..unless u wanna sell that one:p
 
Jay - No need to buy one just pm me your address and I'll loan you mine :) ... it's the least I can do. While I think this one will make the perfect belt buckle I think that idea can wait a bit longer. :lol

I was thinking when the model get tweeked can you split it in half so we can add electronics? I was thinking with how small bluetooth headsets are now we could actually make this a working phone ... or at least bluetooth handset :love
 
Yeh i def think its possible to make this a working unit. It may even be possible to stick a screen in the centre.. but i'll try not to get ahead of myself:p

I guess im gonna have to get my act in gear and start back at this project over the wkend. Its a pity i have no time during the wk:(.. I will design it in 2 parts dont wory:).. Tb im gonna be pming you with a few questions over the wkend
 
Two parts? I'm not sure I follow you JB. Wouldn't it be three? The two outside seem to pop outward simulataneously as the center console with button switches. I'm assuming it could go either way with the one or two working buttons. One springloaded button would be more practical and easier in the long runt though.
 
Ah sorry for the mix up. I mean the centre in two parts so it can be opened for a blue tooth device/something else. I will probably make 2counter sunk screw holes at the back which will be covered by the stainless steel covers.

I agree with the single button to release the spring. Easy concept to design, tough to find parts to make it, they really would have to solid(metal or Delrin/ABS)... owww i can put a sprocket behind that centre piece and snap fit it in so it can freely rotate... Now how do we close it again.. it a cool way??...

Got it. :lol

For the securing of the two peices, usually I see the counter sunk holes on the casing lid and solid or posts tapped like any other electronic. Maybe I'm follwing you again. :/

Are you referring to how to secure in worries that the sprocket will somehow pop out if not closed in a certain way?
 
haha yeh exactly, it'llbe just like any other electronic set-up.

I think i better draw this all up so we are all on the same page:).. I was gonna make the centre of the centre section and the sprocket one piece so the tapered cone would act like a bearing once the centre piece popped thru it...am i making any sense?:p
 
Jay - It looks like there are two sprockets one on each side of the X (total of 4 for both halfs) and a little button at the bottom of one of the black grips that might be the release mechanism. As for closing it again I think we don't over engineer it and make in a manual operation and just slide it together again.

I was thinking that the button would press up against a latching bar that would have two catches one on each end. The catches would be angled like a triangle so when they are closed they would slide over a top latching point and snap into a locking position without any additional effort, kind of like the latch on a door. You don't have to turn the door handle when you close the door. I can draw something up if that doesn't make sense.
 
That makes perfect sense. I wanted to add to that though. To keep the latching in and out even, and not get hung up on the opposite end of the button, it should have the same catch on either side ( box/square set up that slides right to left) of the button is the latch which is spring loaded. I'll sketch my design up asap before I forget.

Lol no I think we are all on the same page:).. Looking forward to seeing those sketches.. Now it feels like a group effort!.. Haha jk:p.. I'll even do up some 3d animations of each design so we can see eat works best.

My measley contribution:



The catches need to be tweaked but you get the idea. I think...

For some reason I kept adding more springs, like in Tool-Time mode: "AR-AR! More power!"


If there seems to be issues engineering this (which I doubt), I can snag an updated shapeway phone and go to town on it.

Is this thing one solid piece or 3 seperate?

Hahaha i like the side notes:p... yeh u got a lot of spring action goin on!.. That seems to be a much more simple idea that what i had planned. I think you are right, a quick release latch is all it needs. And a track can be designed into it.. we just need to design it so we can fit the bluetooth device... How small do these get??
 
I'm sure if you broke open the ear piece and mic, you could fit it in there quite easily. The ear wrap and case are the two largest parts that aren't needed. But to fit the on/off switch to the phone to activate together, not to mention wiring the mic and speaker to the holes without the phone pieces coming apart into a front/back halves will be a nightmare. :/

....lot's of dremel time.
 
Well... I could design the top and bottom so they are 2 piece parts but that will take a bit of sorting out. It can be done, i just have to figure out how..I can shell it all out with the face as a separate piece. I want to make this as user friendly as possible!

Atm im having a hard time getting rid of the thickness of the inside curve. I have gone back to the basic shape and im trying to extrude cut it away... its rather frustrating! But once that is done i can get it into 2 parts.

As for the overall size. Do ye want me to just scale it down or actually "squish" the dimensions??



...Well fixing it was easier than i thought lol... now much slimmer. I'll post a pic soon
