WOW, where to start

I found this site trying to find a Dr. Doom kit for a costume I have always wanted to make. I see sooooo much great work here and am really impressed. I would like to start making some of these things and some I haven't seen yet. Where would I go to find out the basic in modeling/sculting something like a Dr. Doom helmet/armor? Are there some good sites/books/resources you guys can recommend? I haven't seen a thread for such here but I might have missed it. Any advise would be deeply appreciated.

Thanks
A very impressed TheFur.

Fire up that old "Search" button. There are some users who have made movie style Dr. Doom helmet/masks. I don't know if the threads have been archived or what, but they do exist.

Thanks Qui! I have seen a few, but what was missing was what they were made of and/or how they were put together. Some of the Iron Man armores are awsome! I don't want to know everyone's trade secrets and don't want to bother everyone with stupid noob questions. That is why I was also looking for some resource material to help with some of the complete noob questions I am sure to have :cool. I have started palying with "PEPAKURA"as well so that I might design some of my own cool stuff.

Thanks again for your response Qui and have a great day.

There are videos on youtube about sculpting, molding, casting, etc. etc.

Just depends on how you want to go about it?

If you do what is called pepakura (may be spelling that wrong) you print out patterns on your PC printer and cut and fold and paste to make a helmet shape. From there you coat it with resin and/or fiberglass or the like. sand and paint.

Or you sculpt it in clay and use that as a mold to cast parts from... there are several different ways of turning sculptures into plastic masks/helmets.

It really isn't something someone can just give a magic answer to... you just have to research and decide what you want to learn. Once you know that... THEN you can as how what and when about it.

Hope that made SOME sense to you!

Welcome to the RPF! :)

There's a Dr. Doom pep file for the faceplate already, just need to find it. Might have it on one of my hard drives, I'll have a look if you'd like.

Thanks a lot for your responses guys! This is exactly what I was looking for. I can't believe I didn't think of checking youtube. (DUH!!) Now that I have a general idea where to start, I don't feel like a complete dumba$$. I am looking forward to posting pics soon. If you have that pep file that would be great Finhead. If not, I will use my magic google powers to track one down. :) You guys are great and thanks again.

Ok found it, PM me your email addy and I'll send it to ya. It's the comic version but gives ya something to try out if you want. ;)

Hey I'm new here as well so I may not be the best to offer advice but when I started I searched as many forums as possible. Some great ones to check out other then this one are: 405th.com (everything pepakura), the effectslabs.com (especially if you've looking to sculpt) and smoothon.com (for molding/casting tutorial vids).

hehe, you are a popular guy Fin, your mail box is full and won't let me pm you. :) give me a yell when you get some time to clear a few out.
