WOK Monster Maroon gold piping?

Well after having my WOK Captain's uniform custom made for me 15 years ago- I've decided to take the plunge and make this a full blown replica of Kirk's Admiral uniform.

Rank pins and the WOK version Admiral braid are easy enough to come by on ebay- but I'm unsure about the gold piping/cord on the jacket trim, and down the pant leg.

Does anyone know the thickness the piping should be? And was the piping on the jacket the same as the leg?

Thanks in advance.

Hey Kevin!!
From what I can see and I have been looking at pics of Kirk in TWOK it looks like the same trim that is use on the shoulder strap looks like two of them side by side but I will have to conferm this for ya, that what it looks like to me.

Hey Brian thanks!

I've been looking at the Hi-Def pics of WOK from the TrekCore site-

It looks like the jacket piping is slightly wider than the shoulder strap piping. And looking at that pic- the piping looks more flat than I had originally thought (I thought it was a round cord).

But your suggestion has put me on the right track! :thumbsup

I think I saw something similar to what I see in the HD screencap at a fabric store today. I think the same trim was used on the leg as well.

What you want is known as either "russia braid" or "soutache." You can get the good stuff here

http://www.handembroideryshop.co.uk/acatalog/RUSSIA_BRAIDS.html

I would caution you against using most of the gold mylar soutache you'll see at JoAnn's. Typically the stuff they have is the stuff made by Wright's. It's really cheap and tends to shred up when you sew it. It's made differently than the mylar soutache Hand and Lock sells. Sometimes, however, in the trim section at JoAnn's they'll have the good stuff. The easiest way to tell the difference is that the good stuff looks like it's made from gold wire and the cheap stuff by Wright's looks like it's braided from wide flat mylar strips. I recommend ordering from Hand and Lock though; their stuff is very nice. You'll want to order either the 3/16" or the 1/4" for the width of the stuff on his uniform. Also, Hand and Lock's gold mylar soutache is plenty nice stuff, but if you really want to step it up you can get the real gold wire stuff from them too.

PS. The gold stripe on his leg is also soutache in what appears to be either 3/16' or 1/4" width, and if I remember my Star Trek costume specificiations correctly it's set on a 1 inch stripe the color of the jacket.

Hey NavMidn many thanks for the info! :thumbsup

Unfortunately the store names you mention don't sound familiar as I'm in Canada- (I just tried to look up JoAnn's- no Canadian locations... bummer).

But again- this really helps me out! I'm going to check a huge local fabric shop (they should have it).

Last resort will be to order it online- but for something like this, I'd much rather see the product in person before purchasing it. :thumbsup

Also just eyeballing it I would say that the 3/16th width sounds correct; 1/4 looks as if it might be too wide (but I'm just going off a tape measure against my uniform).

Well I went out this morning and bought about 4 yards of 3/16" gold soutache at a local shop- it isn't metallic gold- more like gold thread. Still shiny like silk though.

So when I got home I checked it against my uniform and pant leg- it looked so good I nearly had a heart attack! :lol

Thank-you guys for helping out! :thumbsup
