WIP: McQuarrie Vader Concept Saber

I love McQuarrie's concept art and recently purchased a print of this:

The concept sabers inspired me to do some more research and I found some images of what the saber looks like on the Koto statue of this scene. So, without making this super long winded here is my progress so far.

I'll keep y'all updated on the progress!

Looking good so far. I started one after I did my McQuarrie Luke saber, but kinda stalled out. Hard to tell for sure, looks like it's fairly large-ish, but in Vader's hands that would be OK. Are you using found parts? Be sure to keep posting as you progress, this looks exciting.

Not to hijack, but some years ago I commissioned this concept Luke saber... I didn't know then what I know now, so it's mostly way different than McQuarrie's sketches... but I kind of like it.

It is a tad bigger than I'd like for it to be, but I have been having a hard time finding something the right shape. I'll probably do another from scratch once I get a lathe. Right now what you see is from an $8 walmart floor lamp and a $1 water bottle.

That is still a cool looking saber! I plan on doing a Luke concept after the Vader. Luke's is a little easier to find parts for. Do you know where I can find other McQuarrie sketches of the lightsaber like you had mentioned?

This is the reference I had compiled back in 03... also you might want to check "The Making of Star Wars", I think there are one or two early saber photos in there as well.

The Kotobukiya Luke (actually "Deak") vs Vader is a good rendition from the famous McQuarrie drawing

I had scanned a bunch of details from the old "Art of Star Wars" book... some of these are Han and Luke sabers.

Well, as long as it's all proportional, I don't see a huge problem with that. My own Vader would have been somewhat larger than my Luke. I was having a problem finding an emitter that I like for mine. Found a plumbing flange that's about the right shape and size, but I hate the look of stamped metal edges. Ick. Closest thing I've got that I like so far is a stainless condiment cup with a rolled edge. The part you're using has a nice look to it. Your shapes are pretty much dead-on.

Just to share, here's my McQuarrie Luke:

Compared to the Koto statue - had mine done long before this came out:

phase pistol: That's a really nice reference you've compiled there. I'd forgotten about that poster saber at the bottom. I think I've got all the parts I need to make that one, although in natural metal, not black. Hmmm...
