Will Smith decks Chris Rock at the Academy Awards

Yeah Chris Rock is fast becoming a class act. He apparently urged the Academy to not kick Will Smith out so he could give his speech, did not press charges, and apologized because he didnt know about Jada's disease which is then understandable imo (people are busy and I dont think many knew about Jada's disease).

Meanwhile, the Smiths are handling this terribly. With the son tweeting that how we do it, the tell all book, etc. the Smiths' rep is taking a huge negative hit.

The real slap in the face here is that prop and modelmakers are still ineligible for Academy Awards!

Why is this? Is this because they are part of sourcing or because there is an emphasis on praising CGI now? Or they arnt as big a part in movies compared to other staff?

It's about disrespect.

Imagine the Maltese Falcon without the Maltese Falcon. Imagine Chitty Chitty Bang Bang without the car. Imagine Star Wars without lightsabers. Imagine Titanic without a ship. Movies have always relied on Mcguffins. The people who created them are rarely recognized or remembered. You can get an academy award for blowing up the the Death Star, but who gets an award for building it?

You don't forget the stars though. Do you?

Frankly, despite his "good guy" image, I've never cared for Will Smith. To me he's always came across as smug and full of himself. There's no telling what kind of bizarre relationship he and Jada Smith really have but there's clearly something more going on here than what we can see. He goes from laughing to being her attack dog in an instant. I think Chris Rock has handled this whole thing better than a great many in his position would!

So Chris Rock standing there like Sheldo Cooper not catching on to Will Smith being mad at him, just waiting to get slapped.
Explains why Rock's body language and smile doesn't alter right up to the slap landing.
Thats interesting. Never have heard of that disorder and makes me wonder if I have that. I definitely have ADHD, was diagnosed with asperger autism 10 years ago and have struggled with learning disabilities, mainly in math and english.
This nvld seems to fit within all these, and yet, still its own thing.
I have a really hard time approaching people especially if they are already in a conversation and I need to say/ask a question to them.
I'll have to look more into this.

Decades ago SFX had a smaller role in the industry in general. Lately it has grown way more critical to the work. CGI has basically taken over some of the job from many other tech departments. Set building, makeup, SFX, stunts, etc. But the Academy is under pressure to hold down the number of categories to keep the ceremonies network-friendly.

It's not only SFX people getting snubbed. Stunt performers still don't have a category either, and they have always been important to cinema. They literally get hurt & killed for the art form.

When Star Wars Ep#1 came out in 1999 there was talk about how it should be categorized. It had something like 2000 (out of 2500) shots with CGI work. That was absolutely unheard-of at the time. Other big tentpole movies of the era had like 200 effects shots out of 2500. Should Ep#1 be treated as a live-action movie with effects shots? Or an animated movie with live-action elements? Should there be a new category? Pixar was blowing up big at the same time; should that 3D animation be in a different category from traditional 2D animation?

In the next decade CGI gradually crept into everyone's live-action work. 3D animation started replacing 2D and filling its old slot. The discussions about new categories petered out.

Completely agree....Will Smith and his smug wife tell the whole world they have this really great open relationship....who the f@ck goes around telling anyone that...??!!!

I've always found that people who tell others how great something is, especially really personal stuff they should keep to themselves are over compensating because in reality it's not great and there's something wrong with them and/or it.

Their biggest hypocrisy is that they willingly shared this information with the world and believed they were untouchable when they got criticized for it. This wasn't a Pam and Tommy situation where they had something private stolen and shared against their will. The Smith's chose to tell everyone the sordid details of their personal lives. That's on them.

As devastating as it was to film and television to lose James Avery, I'm glad he didn't live to see this moment. I think he would have been absolutely crushed. You know what would have been classy on Will's part? After his win, he apologized to Rock and gave him the Oscar.

Hell, add flat out murder to the list for someone and the difference is the same.

Those guys all disgraced themselves, yes. However, none of them did it in front of a billion people, live, during the Academy's sole, and the industry's biggest event of the year. There is a difference.

If you get a DUI saturday night after being out with friends, you're not going to lose your job over it. However, if you get a DUI while on the clock and your way back from lunch - you're fired.
