Why do so many people think Star Trek: Into Darkness was bad?

In "City on the Edge of Forever" McCoy's actions prevent the Federation from ever forming in the "prime" universe, they aren't confined to an alternate timeline.

Same with "First Cointact" - the Borg's trip to the past results in Earth being assimilated, and the Enterprise is only protected by being caught in the sphere's wake. The suggestion is that the rest of the fleet from the battle no longer exist.

In the TNG episode "Time's Arrow" (the episode with Mark Twain) they find Data's head in the prime universe, having been left back in the 1800's.

Time travel in "Yesterday's Enterprise" changes the prime universe to prevent war with the Klingons.

Oh, but in this case, the prime universe is untouched... :unsure

Thanks for explaining that Tom :wacko :lol

I'm pretty sure Spock Prime's answer would have been, "We shouldn't have woken him in the first place."

Which makes sense since he was put back in stasis at the end.

Actually the existence of Spock Prime negates that is is an alternate or parallel universe or at least confuses the issue.. Spock prime's knowledge of how they defeated Khan couldn't possibly have helped - it either would be
"the Captain beat him with a bar thing in engineering"
or " See, Khan stole the Genesis device"
JJ Spock "The what?"
Spock Prime "Oh, Carol Marcus created this torpedo that can build planets."
JJ Spock: " Wait, Carol Marcus is here but she's a weapon specialist."
Spock Prime "Nevermind - just punch him and have Uhura shoot him or something."
All this should mean there will be no Space Seed meaning Khan never meets his wife nor will ever be marooned on Seti-Alpha 5 and thus no Wrath of Khan meaning Spock never dies - they never steal the Bird of Prey and most likely Kirk and co never time travel to get the whales.
But with the knowledge that Romulas is going to be destroyed 100 plus years from now they can be ready and stop the Super nova before it toasts the planet. If so, the nacelles on the Enterprise should deflate.

I was one of the journalists/media people who were instrumental in preventing Star Trek TOS's cancellation back in the day. We sent petitions to the network and they responded. We got to visit the set and meet the actors, etc. I don't have a problem with these new ST movies. I consider them typical core-demographic action/adventure films. They are not Star Trek as originally envisioned by Gene Roddenberry , so therefore they are not to be compared with the TOS universe/canon, etc. Just the opinion of one who was a fan, not a fanatic. Enjoy them, or not, for what they are.

Or... ;)

JJ Spock: "Did you defeat him?"

Spock Prime: "Yes; at great cost."

JJ Spock: "How?"

"By double-crossing him."

That's how Kirk did it in the first engagement against Khan- told Khan he was giving him all the info on Genesis, but blasted him instead.

So nuKhan wants the torpedoes (because they contain his crew) and Spocko gives him the torpedoes alright... right up the wazoo!

Of course... my interpretation only. And I'll add that I too believe the "Spock calls Spock" scene was unnecesary.

My hat is off to you. I think I've read just about everything in print on how the fans got together and saved tge show - even sat down with Majel Barrett Roddenberry and got her POV as well as what Jean was doing during this time. I never got to talk to Bjo but Majel spoke so highly of her and all she did. I was working on a screenplay about the fans saving Trek that was bought by Mtv/ Paramount - Were you by any chance part of the husband and wife team who had the opportunity to visit the set?

I'll say this - strip away the limitless budget and put JJ Trek on in place of what Jean gave us and there wouldn't have been any "I grok Spock" stickers slapped on Paramount execs cars, picket lines in front of the studio, or fans paying to fly the stars down to convention halls - I was reading an interview done by JJ the other day and he sais "his favorite Star Trek movie was Galaxy Quest" - nuff said

I have liked nothing JJ has made. He's like michael bay: he's good at getting the attention of 13 year olds while driving away dedicated fans of franchises because he doesn't care. He sees a paycheck and a way to feed his ego. Brian Singer is this way with the xmen movies. He wasn't a fan. Fans won't get a film for fans unless it's directed by one. You'll get massive budgets with a title we know slapped on a dumbed down boob and explosion filled turd. Sadly we real fans are out numbered by braindead teenagers.

Yeah I guess I'm not a real fan then. :rolleyes

Why? In Space Seed, all ended well. Khan killed no one, Kirk let him have a planet in the end and there was that moment of speculation as to what this new world would bring in 100 years. What Spock Prime should have said was that they shouldn't have waiting 100 years to see what had happened.

This is another huge JJ Trek no go for me.
I find it stretching all credibility that someone like JJ Kirk would ever be let near a such a vessel let alone command it.
I think of how hard it is to become captain of US aircraft carrier or nuke sub.
Command of a starship is going to be just as hard to earn and just as easy to lose forever if you screw up.

Yup, so everyone saying 'but that's just an alternate timeline' are just missing the point. All that indicates that the default handling of changing history alters the one and ONLY timeline universe. So JJ still took that steaming dump on TNG and DS9.

I like how ppl. Can accept an alternate 1985, but if you make a new timeline in St all **** breaks loose.

That's because within BTTF's canon it makes sense. ST *was* fairly consistent in it's time travel effects until the reboot.

I've moved past that aspect of it though, there are plenty of other reasons to not like STID. :lol

In the end though I turned my brain off and had fun. Was it a memorable film? No. Was it a great film? No. Did it suck? No. I made a conscious decision to just enjoy my popcorn and accept it for what it was.

There were some clever moments and some dumb ones but in the end it was a fun ride, nothing more, nothing less.

To me the new timeline is like that tng episode where worf keeps jumping alternate realities and there's minor things different but worfs reality still exists somewhere.

This is exactly what I think.

An entertaining movie, but not memorable or original.

No. I was part of a group of journalists and media people (I was a disk jockey at K-DOT in Scottsdale, Arizona at the time) who were among those that got over 5,000+ signatures each to keep the show on the air. The group visited the set, met some of the actors (Shatner wasn't among them, Nimoy was) then had lunch in the studio commissary. We were given souvenirs and publicity packets, etc. (which I no longer have). It was really nice. The main thing I remember was how cheesy the sets were! You could see the woodgrain through the paint on the plywood and the wrinkles in the screens above the stations on the Bridge set. We were photographed but weren't allowed to take pictures ourselves. I didn't get any prints, even though we were promised them (typical Hollywood follow-through)

Classic franchises should not be used as dollar-guarantees for dumb rides. Especially when those responsible have declared their total lack of interest in the values of the classic they've chosen to leech on. Too many ball-less suits in H-wood too chicken**** to make their own franchise. Thus, lovers of the original get angry.

Whoa... I didn't even make tha Carol Marcus connection. So I guess that's another "alternate universe" thing that won't change. Odds are they'll bang it out and have David in the next film. Maybe the next villain kidnaps their son... Although a better "alternate universe" would be that they have a kid, and he ends up turning bad and Kirk ultimately has to kill his own son. Whoa!!
Maybe we can rip off Pocahontas/Dances with Wolves/Ferngully/Avatar and have David go native with the Klingons for a real paradox. Just don't bring Christopher Lloyd back.
