Why do so many people think Star Trek: Into Darkness was bad?

But at least Nick Meyer had bloody good taste in composers. He chose James Horner for Trek 2, and Cliff Eidelman for Trek 6 (still one of the best Trek scores made).

Regardless of whether he had been a fan or not before, he actually "got" trek, you can see from the way he utilised each character sufficiently, and gave action, plot and the kitchen sink thrown in.

JJ Abrams's Trek 09 and Trek ITD are just CGI fests, and have thrown out the science and exploration morals of the original series into the dump!

If anything, Michael Giachinno is a hack, rubbish scores for both the Abram trek movies, how the hell people call that Trek worthy is embarrasing to be honest!

No wonder Sci Fi movies are garbage these days, they have none of the pomp and grandour of previous ones and they barely have the music such as a Jerry Goldsmith or other type.

For the record, Nemesis had nothing for me either. Sad the TNG crew went out with a whimper.
Whale Trek was alienating to me as well it was a major WTF are they doing????
Whale Trek was the first time Trek let me down badly, and again like now, massive crowd pleaser.
Insurrection I barely remember, evil star fleet again I think? Sigh.
The much hated Trek 5 did contain a good scene or two but overall a bad film.

So it's not just JJ Trek with me.

Any previous Trek film wipes the floor with the embarrasing JJ Abrams Trek movies.

Trek 1, yeah it was boring, but so what, it did the job of converting a tv show to big screen and had a bloody Jerry Goldsmith score!
Trek 2, yes, Khan, the non white version! Menacing and another epic score from James Horner
Trek 3, a bit of a borefest, not much going on, but ties up the Spock story.
Trek 4, a hilarious comedy, with classic scenes including Scotty talking to a computer mouse, and the classic "ruskie retard" scene, not to mention the numerous other fantastic scenes. A real classic!
Trek 5, yes, a bit of a mish mash, but I love this movie, Sybok has more charisma than the entire JJ Abrams cast, and the classic "I notice your pain" scene (gloriously sampled by Trekkie fan 2pac shakur no less!).
Trek 6, glorious movie, action packed, and a bloody damn good musical score by Cliff Eidelman! it doesn't get better than this!

The next generation movies were all pretty reasonably good, aside from the shambolic Kirk Death and Insurrection, but hey, Tom Hardy made a good young Picard!

These new JJ Abrams movie just don't have anything remotely acceptable in them other than an overload of CGI and frankly some of the worst music i've heard in a movie in years.

I actually rather like the new score for Star Trek.

Figures though, I really can't get on board with someone who thinks Sybock had charisma. To each their own, but I thought he was a dreadful antagonist.

X2, and Tom Hardy was complete crap.

I liked the new score :thumbsup

I loved the score from the first one... the second one was a rehash of the theme but didn't introduce anything new or exciting.

I'll have to listen to some of the older ones again. I know they had some great themes.

I was never a fan of ST until the JJ Abrams version came out, and I must say, I really enjoyed the first 2 installments

I thought the acting, effects, and action was fine. It was the sloppy plot holes and "cut and paste" ending where they lost me. Lindelof is good at interpersonal dialog, but couldn't write a coherent plot at gunpoint. I suspected it after "Prometheus," and STID just confirms it.

Careful... next you'll be accused of liking all of the Transformers movies and shortly after be outcast to mySpace

Saw it today. It was amazing. Acting was top notch. Especially Khan. Story was great. Klingons... Little weird looking.
I think it was at least as good if not better than the first JJ Trek and probably better than half or more of the older ones.

I agree! I saw it in 3D Imax and it was beautiful. Absolute perfect eye candy visuals and some of the best audio I've heard in a movie in a while. But above all the story moved quickly and kept me mesmerized like a 10 year old throughout the whole movie. Cant wait for the DVD to come out. "Khaaaannn!!!"

:)

Maybe we all need less whine and more wine:

Star Trek: The Wine is now a thing that exists

"By rebooting it, he essentially said that the entire TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager (I can live with that one) never happened and just took a big steaming dump on them."

I don't get this leap for two reasons.

1) ST09 flat out says that it's an "alternate reality." Being that it is an alternate reality, it has to be alternate to something, which would be the "Prime" reality.
2) It's a fictional universe for crying out loud!

Nobody complains that the X-Men comic books "didn't happen" when the X-Men movie came out and changed who comprised the 'original' X-Men. Nobody complained that it was "[taking] a big steaming dump" on decades of cannon. Where was Ant-Man in the Avengers movie?!?!?! DANG YOU JOSS WHEDON FOR TAKING A DUMP ON THE AVENGERS!!!!!!!!!!

Again, not saying that you have to like JJ Trek if you really feel that its not your cup of tea. But let's be honest here, the 'outrage' over Star Trek is unique over other film franchises, for better or worse.

Actually the entire TOS, TNG, DS9, Voyager DID happen, only in another parallel universe. Basically JJ needed a new template for Star Trek. If he had dumped on the whole Star Trek mythos then Spock Prime wouldn't exist. Because Spock Prime does exist proves that he's not stomping on the previous stuff. Also to validate this, Spock asks Spock Prime how he defeated Khan. If JJ's stomped on the mythos, why ask Spock Prime.

I consider that his Deus Ex Machina card. Anytime he runs into a wall with the story he can use his Spock Prime lifeline for his final answer.

That's not only lazy writing, it kills any drama, too.
Hey this is new! Wow, what do we do about this species/being/crisis? Shall we discuss it, get our heads together and think of a solution? Nah, let's as Leonard Nimoy, he'll know.
