Who is this "Sidkit" and why don't I own his Mal Reynolds pistol?

well as i said, ive already ordered a kit, and i DID ask Sid for an extra magazine, and he IS going to throw one in!
what a heckava super nice guy!

Did he charge you any extra for it? I'd gladly pay for an extra. Since you've got such a rapport, can you ask him if he'd be willing to sell extra mags?

Gigatron:
I was thinking about neodymium magnets, as I bet they're the only magnets small enough to fit in there and strong enough to keep it very secure. On the other hand...those puppies are strong. What kind of electronics-damaging radius do they have compared to "normal" magnets?

Maybe we could organize a 'group buy' to get a bulk rate?

Edit:
Just e-mailed him asking about a group buy. I'll post his reply when I hear back!

I got my kit today, and it is definitely a beauty! However, being the person I am, I decided to completely dismantle it (it was partially assembled) so that I could build it up myself, following the instructions. I also wanted to see how the trigger-and-hammer setup worked, since the trigger clicked but seemed awfully loose. And I discovered two things...

1. The spring for my "hammer's leverage" is about half the length it appears to be in the instructions.

2. The spring that goes onto the actual trigger is not there at all, which I imagine is why it felt so loose to me.

So, I am in a quandary. Do I e-mail Sidiero and ask for replacement parts, or do you think it would be easy to find the right kind of springs at, say, a hardware store? I ask because I am an impatient fool, and do not want to wait for new parts to ship if there's an alternative! :rolleyes

To be honest with you, I've never see any effect on electronics. I have a whole bunch of magnets stuck to the shelf of my computer desk and I've never seen any adverse effects on any electronic device that I've put up there.

Ever been close to a tv screen with magnets? Interesting lightshow! :lol

hey dood, email Sid, hell hook you up....

i am going to have to LEARN patience on MY kit because the plating process will take WEEKS

Hrm...are the thumbscrews supposed to fit into the holes, or do they absolutely need to be glued into place? There's a definite "step" on the thumbscrew's post, but even though it's slightly smaller, it won't fit into the indentation. =/

Mine fit, but they are very snug, I think I'm going to shave the posts just a bit and epoxy them in place.

You will have to sand or shave off a little on the thumbscrews. Also... I STRONGLY recommend that you drill a small hole in both the screw and the "socket" on the gun and insert a steel pin there when you glue it.

OH NO! :( The pin thing is exactly what I haven't had the courage to do with my resin kit, and my resin thumb screws keep popping off. :( I was really hoping I wouldn't have to worry about that with this kit. I was wanting to do the costume, and when I put it in the holster, I don't want be keep loosing my thumb screws, but I just don't have steady enough hands, or a drill press, to drill them out. :(

Oh, if you don't want to use magnets on the mag, you could always us Velcro. :lol

Get yourself a tool called a "pin vice". Most hobby stores should have them (and I'm certain the Games Workshop does). It's a small (manual) hand drill most often used for securing small details (such as arms on lead miniatures).

Get a really tiny drill bit and do it by hand, slowly. The Sidkit metal is so soft it'll go through that as well and the resin will give way like butter. You don't have to drill deep. Just take your time and it'll work out. There's really nothing to it.

yeah, but I haven't had a tube TV in years. Plus I knew enough to keep magnets away from them even when I did.

I haven't noticed any ill-effects on either my GPS unit or my levitating globe, both of which are right near the magnets.

Let's say I drill the hole, add the pin, and glue in the thumbscrews. If I ever got a hold of more accurate thumbscrews, would it be possible or plausible to remove the pin and just screw that sucker in there? Does it depend on the kind of glue I use? Or would I be destined to have a ton of work on my plate in order to switch them out?

Well, I would definitely say it depends on the glue... but I doubt you'll be able to get hold of more accurate screws as the only person that supplied them was Phil... and that was a loooong time ago.

But really... Sid's thumbscrews aren't that bad. They're just a little soft in the knurling. (I didn't mean to make a big deal out of it.) :angel

Yeah, I suppose anyone who's bought them in the past have probably already attached them to their resin casts...still, I can always hold out hope!

I wonder if it would be worth the risk/effort to Dremel the knurling to be sharper...I just want everything to be perfect! Is that so much to ask? :rolleyes

I managed to buy some wood grips from a fellow RPFer (his only set that he decided not to use on his resin kit) -- he also offered me the two front thumbscrews but I passed them up as I thought I'd be happy with the ones that came with the kit - but if you drop him a line, he may still have the thumbscrews for sale -- you can write him here:

Got my kit today -- as wioth others, it is mainly assembled, but I imagine I'll need to take it apart to clean it up and blue it...for those that have already done it, how difficult was it to take these kits apart?
