Who is this "Sidkit" and why don't I own his Mal Reynolds pistol?

thats odd about the shipping.......

has anyone heard anything back about an extra magazine?
he hasnt replied to my email yet..

Yeah, an extra magazine would be sweet. Even better would be an extra magazine without the notches cut out of the top.

Has anyone given any thought to how to tighten the safety lever? It seems it's only tension comes from the screw that holds it in place.

Might be more worth while for everyone to get together and do a run of more accurate magazines. Wouldn't be hard to make a master and then find someone to cast it in pewter. I know I would want a taller more accurare magazine. But from the look of the pictures it seems that a taller magazine would hit the internal frame he made.

Yes but inside the frame there are two little ridges that could easily be dremeled off to allow for a taller mag.

It would be nice to have accurate spare mags just for a "lying about" type of display with one permanently set inside the pistol, and the others sitting nearby loaded.

Anyone come up with any ideas as to magnets or summat to allow for removeable magazine in the sidkit?

Also, is it pewter he uses?

I think it's pewter, it looks a lot like pewter. Anyway, what I meant was not so much the notches inside, but rather the frame itself, it looks like there's an angle on it that would interfere with a full (accurate) height mag. Easily dealt with though I imagine.

You could easily attach come magnets to the top of the mag and then mount some inside I would imagine.

Question to whoever's gotten theirs already: are magnets REALLY necessary to keep the magazine in place, but removable? Would it pressure-fit, or just slide out at an inopportune moment?

There is zero pressure on it. It requires at least something to keep it in place. Magnets, glue, scotch tape... Otherwise, it's not staying in at all.

Thanks, I dig it so far, even though my fingers won't stop smelling of metal.:lol

Sidkit's instructions call for wet sanding with 800 grit sandpaper, the finest I could find was 600 grit. I was just too anxious to get to work on the gun and didn't feel like ordering freaking sandpaper online, so I went with the 600. That, and the brass buffing wheel for my Dremel tool.

I kinda modified the instructions a bit for the Perma Blue stuff. It says to swab it on, let it sit for no more than 30-60 seconds, then douse in water to kill the chemical reaction. Bluing is a multi-staged process. The more you do it, the darker it will get. So, I took some of those little tupperware containers you see in the background, and immersed the pieces into the solution for a few minutes, during which I kinda basted them like a turkey, flipping them over, swabbing on the solution etc. Then I would yank them out, and drop them in another tupperware dealie full of water. Then I would dry it off with a rag, wipe any residual crusty stuff off with a toothpick, then repeat. This seems to have worked pretty well overall.

Some caveats about the bluing process....

The angles on the Mal gun around that weird T shaped thingie on the receiver are a real PITA. It is almost impossible to get in those little corners with the sandpaper or the buffing wheel. I'd recommend you use a Q-Tip or something else blunt and small to work the sandpaper into those corners or else the bluing will not take there as well.

If you choose to do the immersion bluing as I have, or if you plan to pour your solution into a container for easier access etc. Bluing is a rusting process, so shortly after you apply the solution, you will notice a little foamy dots all over the surface of the metal, this is rust, or something similar that is being pulled out of the pores of the metal and as you wipe it off with the swab, or immerse it into the bluing, it will wash into your solution. Eventually, your tub of solution will be a caramel brown color. Not to worry though, to clean it, just strain it through a coffee filter into another clean container, and it will come out crystal clear on the other side, leaving all that silt behind in the filter. Cleaner bluing solution does seem to work better.

MMM, to Mechamaniac you listen. :) I did something very simollar to my parks obi-wan grenade. I used one of those little plastic shaker things that you get garlic power in. cleaned it out really good, and the grenade, with stem, and all, fit perfect. I just put in some Perma blue, screwed on the cap, and slowly swished it around for, a minute, or so, rinsed it off, dried it, and repeated. :) I just have to add the oil. Oh, but be sure you clean it really well, first, I have had times in the past were I had to start all over, because it didn't stick, do to the tiniest pit of crud.

I love that stuff though, it's quite, easy, durable, and gives much better finish then paint ever has. I can't what to get to Blue mine.

BTW. Mechamaniacit, yours looks fantastic so are, and every pic in the companion CLEARLY shows that it had that kind of finish over the majority of the body, of the gun..

Ok ,gang I've had this for a few weeks now, but been holding off posting until I could get a proper picture taken. Here is my copy of the pistol. It's been colored with the candy-color method I described above. As you can see, I was going for the cleaner look seen in some of the later promo shots, and the metal sheen has been preserved (yes I know I missed coloring the front sight).

Also, you'd have to rig some real steel in there 'cause magnets will not bite on the kit.

Still, even if this is a good kit... I'm not canceling my Serenity version from QMX 'cause I want to support the license holder so we can get more stuff in the future... and I'll never get rid of the resin cast I got from Phil. It was my first Firefly prop and still has a premium spot in my Ikea Detolf!
