Who is this "Sidkit" and why don't I own his Mal Reynolds pistol?

Out of curiosity: has anyone thought of getting the parts of Sid's kit molded in bronze? Or would something happen in the process that would change the size of the gun?

well that would be "recasting" and hence be immoral.... however i DO plan to plate mine

Why don't you ask Sidkit if he can make one for you in bronze?

From what I know about casting in brass, there is much more shrinking involved and so the gun would probably end up smaller, plus he'd have to make wax investment molds or something like that. Him casting in pewter means he can use silicone molds.

To recast a set just for yourself would be VERY costly, if you couldn't afford the finished brass ones (Model 47 as it was named) that were offered at $1600, you couldn't afford getting a one off cast in brass. Not to mention the fact that the sidkit is far inferior to the Model 47 in it's use of parts and construction.

Holy smack-a-lackis!!!

that looks really nice....
I am REALLY up in the air about how to finish mine..
Im FULLY prepared to have mine sent off and brass plated, however, im with you man, I have NEVER seen a firearm AT ALL thats made of brass.... the only time it was really used was like on the older '51 Colt navy's with the brass frame... but certainly not the BODY of the gun...
so that got me thinking maybe i could do a VARIATIOn and make it more "propably" than accurate, and have the triggerguard/grip frame brass plated.... that would make a more realistic looking weapon...

SOOOO many options..... maybe ill have it figured out by the time i get the kit...

question tho.... how did YOU sand/polish the peices?

Thanks, I dig it so far, even though my fingers won't stop smelling of metal.:lol

Sidkit's instructions call for wet sanding with 800 grit sandpaper, the finest I could find was 600 grit. I was just too anxious to get to work on the gun and didn't feel like ordering freaking sandpaper online, so I went with the 600. That, and the brass buffing wheel for my Dremel tool.

I kinda modified the instructions a bit for the Perma Blue stuff. It says to swab it on, let it sit for no more than 30-60 seconds, then douse in water to kill the chemical reaction. Bluing is a multi-staged process. The more you do it, the darker it will get. So, I took some of those little tupperware containers you see in the background, and immersed the pieces into the solution for a few minutes, during which I kinda basted them like a turkey, flipping them over, swabbing on the solution etc. Then I would yank them out, and drop them in another tupperware dealie full of water. Then I would dry it off with a rag, wipe any residual crusty stuff off with a toothpick, then repeat. This seems to have worked pretty well overall.

Some caveats about the bluing process....

The angles on the Mal gun around that weird T shaped thingie on the receiver are a real PITA. It is almost impossible to get in those little corners with the sandpaper or the buffing wheel. I'd recommend you use a Q-Tip or something else blunt and small to work the sandpaper into those corners or else the bluing will not take there as well.

If you choose to do the immersion bluing as I have, or if you plan to pour your solution into a container for easier access etc. Bluing is a rusting process, so shortly after you apply the solution, you will notice a little foamy dots all over the surface of the metal, this is rust, or something similar that is being pulled out of the pores of the metal and as you wipe it off with the swab, or immerse it into the bluing, it will wash into your solution. Eventually, your tub of solution will be a caramel brown color. Not to worry though, to clean it, just strain it through a coffee filter into another clean container, and it will come out crystal clear on the other side, leaving all that silt behind in the filter. Cleaner bluing solution does seem to work better.

Thanks for the info. As to not being able to afford the 47, I've never even heard of it till recently. It kinda pisses me off, but them's the breaks.

Sorry, didn't mean to imply that you were being cheap, just trying to put the cost into perspective. From what I understand, the Model 47 sales were pretty much all done on the down low to keep it as low profile as possible.

I didn't take it that way at all, man. Seriously, no prob. Your posts are above average polite, so no worries.:thumbsup

It's just finding out that there were ones made in bronze (which I first discovered when a couple of Moffeaton's auctions were discussed) that just kinda jangles my dangle.

Well, most of us here would have to do something else with our dangles (or with someone else's) to be able to afford the $1600 Model 47. :lol

It'd've been nice to even have been able to have had the luxury of my eyeballs being able to bug out; being completely ignored seems a bit...well, I'll just pinch my tongue between my fingers and say apple-ish.:angel

I heard from Sid via email. He said that that he breaks shipments into 2 parcels to avoid customs problems & just to keep an eye out for a 2nd parcel.

How odd. All my eggs were delivered in one basket, so to speak. Anyway, good that you heard back from him. Hope it all works out as planned.

I have received parcels from him in the past that were shipped in two shipments, while other folks (who ordered the same item) got their's in one. The second package from my order came about a week later.

In other news, I really want one of his MAL pistols. REALLY. I just can't swing it monetarily right now... :(
