Who is this "Sidkit" and why don't I own his Mal Reynolds pistol?

Phillippes has the post from earlier in the month in the junkyard about one of the hero Mal holster rigs for sale with pictures. The major difference that I can see is the thumb break area is different on the ebay rig, most likely do it it also saying it fits the scofield & colt pistols. The rig in that ebay link has the thumb break straps fall just behind the hammer, where the pictures in Phillippes post show the straps being along the front edge/falling so it would cover the hammer. You also can't tell if it has the rectangular stitch detailing after the buckle holes & it wouldn't come with the clip pouches, so those would have to be made & custom dyed to match.

Thanks for the info. Man, I wish I had the cash to buy that screen-used rig from Serenity. That's a fine piece.

I was considering getting one custom-made for my soon-to-be metal Mal pistol, but I'd expect to pay highly. I'll see what happens.

A little off topic again, but the holster rig was also something that came with the brass Mal replicas that were available...forgot to list that before.

Here is a comparison pic of the Sidkit (left) and Philippes resin casting (right)

Make of it what you will.

I dunno, I can't see any more instances of a simillar nature.

The general quality of the piece and VFM is very good though IMO, no question about that.

Sidewinder, it looks like you have a sidkit version. Does it look like you could reinforce the barrel with a solid piece of rod-stock? Could you tap where the thumb screws go, and actually use thumb screws?

Thanks,

Don

The barrel is hollow (15mm ID) right down to where it joins the gun which is solid for about 5-6mm.

Muzzle......................receiver

On my kit there are two holes in the barrel mount and two coresponding tapped holes in the barrel with two dome head allen screws to bolt it on - similar to the prop I think.

Incidentally, Birchwood Casey Plumb Brown apllied cold gives an even dark grey finish.

so where can one find a nice leather Capt Mal holster rig?

the holster isn't all that tough to make... i spent about 4 hours on this, and maybe $25 worth of materials...

it's based on the tv version, and molded around my phillipes pistol. i roughed it up quite a bit to make it look old and worn.

i did the stitching by hand, which was the most tedious part. i punched the holes for the stitches with a drill press which sped things up a lot. without that, it would be slower.

this one is for a friend. i'm going to make up another one and try to do up a tutorial.

Both moulded from the same master?

When I first saw that SidKit was making a metal Mal, the first thing that popped into my head (reinforced once we learned Phillippes wasn't going to make more wooden grips) was that he had recast it from Philippes' resin gun...

But is that unethical? After all, it wasn't his own sculpt, it was molded directly from an original. Do the rules of recasting apply to something like that? Sure it's kind of a jerk move if he did it without permission, but at least he wasn't stealing Phil's work....Right? :wacko I don't even know how the rules work on this.

"The code is more what you'd call "guidelines" than actual rules". ;)

Couldn't resist.

If he recast Philippes cast-from-screen-used gun (or parts of) then it's impolite as an absolute minimum.

I don't suppose under our self imposed guidelines that it can be called recasting as screen-used or original props seem to be fair game.

It'll all come out in the wash.

I always thought that the community generally accepted that items of screenused origin were okay to recast. Where would, say, the Vader helmet collectors be if it weren't?

(^ not necessarily an official RPF stance, just a personal perception...and certainly no insult is meant toward Phillipes)

I agree that it would be impolite of someone to do so and start selling copies right in the backyard of the guy ya got the first one from, of course. Hell, there are off the shelf items I've thought about selling and have held off when another member happened to be offering the same thing in the JY.

Off screen used... yeah... but off a copy of a screen used... hmm... nah... not cool, unless you got permission from the guy who made the copy of the screen used available to the community.

Though... the two features pointed at in the picture above is NOT on my Philippes cast... whatever that means. But seriously... where would someone get the gun so right, if not using the real thing or a copy of one as a base of reference - the Wilco kit, for instance, is clearly an original sculpt, as it isn't 100% screen/prop accurate - but this Sidkit kit most definitely IS accurate.

I will have to write him to ask what the deal is... just to be sure.

To anyone who has the Sidkit: would vyou say it would be worthwhile selling your resin Phillippes to get this one?

A casting taken from a casting is still a recast. You don't know how much it cost or how much effort went into acquiring the first cast. The next casting would not be a casting of the movie prop. It would be a recast of the first persons replica. Either way not cool.

Sorry, I didn't know it was established that the Sidkit is a Phillipes recast. I haven't read the thread since you guys were talking about grips. Can see now hoe my post was badly timed :(
