Who is this "Sidkit" and why don't I own his Mal Reynolds pistol?

Real wood grips, brass body pieces (made the same way as the real hero guns), faux bullets in the magazine, wooden display box etc.
*sigh* looks like a missed opportunity to me... An amazing 'missed opportunity' at that.

You get what you pay for.

Not necessarily, Mike. I know of a number of people that have purchased his metal BR kit and all have reported being very satisfied with them. In fact, over at PropSummit, we recently completed a contest where several of the entries were built-up from his kit. Click here to see their results.

Sidkit has also been accused of recasting Coyle BR parts. Although I don't recall any definitive evidence to support such a claim.

I've seen both the claim and the "proof" and can say that it is far from definitive. And, in the absence of "definitive proof", an accusation is just that.

The brass ones were extremely limited too, so that would have contributed to the price.

Undoubtedly. I wasn't trying to detract from their brilliance at all. I would LOVE to have one, I gave serious thought to selling a ton of other stuff that I collect so I could buy one, but in the end, it was just too rich for my blood.

It's as good as if not better than the Denix LeMat.
Every bit the heft of the Denix, as well.
I wouldn't recommend dropping it, but it'll carry nicely in a holster.

The phillipes resin cast is above the metal pistol.

And above that...welll....don't be speakin' to those prisoners, OK?

I didn't say the SIDKIT wasn't worth the money. It sure looks great to me. I was just saying. If something cost less it usually is less. Not always to be sure. That clear enough. Don't read your thoughts into MY posts...again.

Also I stated there was no definitive proof. But the question has risen and never really been settled. At least I seem to think it was still an issue. I may have missed the thread with that discussion.

Looking at the instructions, it seems like you can get a very suitable finish with the chemical treatments the guy is using.

Like posted above, I just wonder how soft the metal is.

The SidKit BR blaster used a relatively soft metal - probably a large pewter component to the metal. So, the Mal gun is likely susceptible to denting/dinging as well. That said, hey - it is metal, and for those who don't "need" the Philippes masterpiece, probably not a bad buy [recasting concerns aside, of course]. :rolleyes

I'm wondering if there's any plausible way to strengthen a potentially-soft metal...

Or to brass-plate these pieces...

Now I need money!

NOW!

Maybe not the best kit of the world (compared to the all-brass one), but I really WANT one now!

so... Does anybody needs a graphic/comic/concept artist?:D

:lol

How soft is soft when it comes to replica guns? Are those "Collectors' Armory" cast guns considered soft? Are we guaging by the thumbnail-makes-a-nick test or dropping it on the ground? I would be concerned if it melted like butter if left in the sun, or bent like silly putty when pressure is applied but I don't think that is the case here. I guess I am looking for a way to quantify what is soft. I just assumed any metal is tougher than resin, and I own props made of both.

So, before I look into either version, how soft is soft on the Sidkit? Owning many real guns of varying vintage, I know if I drop or bang one, it'll leave a mark. I wear a gun 40 hrs a week at work and another off duty, both have been banged into chairs, car door frames, house doors, dropped, etc. and they show it so I don't expect either a resin or metal gun to be impervious to damage. Thanks for any info.

I am pretty sure the Sidkit metal guns are a high Tin content pewter (almost all tin perhaps). I am not sure what other metals he puts into them, but it can't be lead because of the EU ban on lead. They are very heavy as well.

I know folks who have built his Blade Runner blaster and none have commented on any softness issues. In face, they were uniformly happy with their Sidkit blasters inc. those who built them to resemble the Worldcon version. He apparently has a decent rep for shipping out in a timely manner.

His Scout Blaster has some nice features but it looks as if he used the toy version for the basis, and not the much smaller but more screen accurate version. Nonetheless, metal and a laser...pretty cool.

Well, if by "collectors armory" you mean Denix, not soft at all. I don't think Sidkit uses a soft metal. While it isn't brass, lets not make it sound like starburst.

Here is a good way to test how soft metal is: If someone slams it into your skull, which one gives?

:confused

The casual pressure of, for instance, a fingernail against the SidKit will not produce a mark. I've seen a number of built-up SidKit BRs, and they've seemed pretty sturdy. However, you can "write" with a SidKit; that is, if you drag it along a piece of paper, it will leave a line...

I'd like to know what happens when you slam it into starburst...
