Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - Aged Bronze Bullets

Re: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - with Toon Pistol!

Hey all-

I'm not sure if you can tell from the pics, but the bullets I made came out in different scales (not intentional). I got frustrated and took a break with the idea that when I returned to this project I'd build the gun next so I'd have a common point of reference.

I started the gun at 11:00 pm Saturday night and had everything assembled and the first coat of primer on by 4:00 am.

Progress pics...

I scaled the gun based on known objects, the barrel is a piece of 2" dowel and the gun tip is a 1" dowel.

The gun is made from materials I had on hand -this plywood will need a lot of clean up.

Cut and rough sanded the body pieces and added texture to the grips

The barrel -I don't use my drill press often, but it sure comes in handy when you need it

I spent most of Sunday filling, priming and sanding

During the process I snapped off the hammer. I'm going to (re-)build and mold that piece separately and attach it to the gun with pins. I'm pretty well done with final clean up, unfortunately I got some orange peeling I'm going to have to deal with. Here's where she stands:

Re: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - with Toon Pistol!

I finished my rough paint job on one side earlier in the week -finally got back home so I could post them.

Masked and white paint added

With a fine-tip paint brush I could probably clean this up, but this was just a quick and dirty to see how it would look.

Now back to the bullets...

Re: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - with Toon Pistol!

Started working/re-working the bullets. Pretty happy with how they're coming out.

Building the "blanks" to the correct scale.

Awesome build man!

I saw the original prop at Lucas Films office in San Francisco. I have many HD pics I wish I could share with you, but as we all know Lucas Film doesn't play and does not want internal pictures being leaked out to the public.

Thanks for the compliment. I'm sure your pics are terrific -guess I'll have to wing it with the reference pictures I have.

Re: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - with Toon Pistol!

Your new bullets are looking much closer to the real ones. Well done!
I'm enjoying watching your build.

Re: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - with Toon Pistol!

Time to pour some rubber.

Re: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - with Toon Pistol!

Finally got to spend some time with the bullets this weekend. First pour fresh out of the mold:

I started painting but ran into a couple of issues. Hit all the bullets with gray primer (which should be the color of the bullets faces), then masked the faces and scarves and hit the bodies with gloss yellow.

The weathers been cool and wet, so the yellow wouldn't dry -it just got sticky. I dusted with baby powder and that got me back in business, but some of the paint peeled away.

Anyway... started with the fine paint brushes and started working the details. Got all the bodies done, just need to do the faces and touch up a few damaged areas:

I'm on the road for the next couple of weeks, so I'll have plenty of time to plan how to finish the faces...

Thanks for looking.

Re: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - Bullets Cast and Painted!

Got the bullets all cleaned up and painted:

I wasn't happy with the white eyes -in the movie they're more yellow (and set off better against the figures with white beards).

Touched up the eyes and painted some buttons -then took some beauty shots:

I'd hoped to mold and cast the toon pistol over the weekend, but wrecked my back and spent most of Sunday on the couch. Oh well, not a terrible way to spend the weekend.

More to come soon...

Re: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - Bullets Cast and Painted!

Great job mate, loved the fact you redid the bullets to suit the gun's scale. Now you just need to start on the case.
I loved this movie as a kid, and was totally freaked out by judge doom. Keep up the great work!

Re: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - Bullets Cast and Painted!

Man these turned out great. The yellowing of the eyes was a good choice. Keep it up. Definetly keeping an eye out for more progress pics. Great job.

Thanks, I really appreciate the positive feedback and encouragement.

Just cast my first resin toon pistol -I'm very pleased with it. A little minor clean up and I'll start painting.

Re: Who Framed Roger Rabbit? - Bullets Cast and Painted!

Dormant but not forgotten...

I wanted to make a case for the pistol and dum dums, but wasn't quite sure how to move forward (my solution needs to be repeatable). For me, when I'm not sure how to proceed I take a break and let my subconscious noodle on it for awhile.

Now its done noodling and we're off to the races.

Step one, create a prototype inset piece to hold the props

Finished the prototype with purple high-gloss paint and built a mold box

I changed my mind and decided to use the silicone mold as a buck to vac-form the tray

Work continues on the case.

Made sure I was recording the dimensions in a (rough) sketch and finished the top of the mockup.
