Who else watched Predators yesterday?

Saw it last night thanks to SVTStingRay's random act of kindness. Thanks again! Thoughts:

I was entertained. It's a good movie. The third act and ending felt real thin to me. To Cayman's point, I wasn't looking for a pat ending necessarily. I just felt like the finale was real light compared to acts 1 & 2. I perused this thread and I keep seeing people refer to plot twists. To me, this is a movie completely devoid of any kind of twists. Are you referring to the Grace thing? Can't say I can call that a twist. and yes, poorly timed. At that point in the movie, uh, who really cares?

It's a movie that certainly pays homage to the original, which is good but in retrospect I wish they had given us a bit more "what are these predators all about anyway?" new stuff.

As a crossover to the "stuff you see in commercials but is not in the movie" thread, the scene in the commercials where Brody has all the laser sights aimed at him during the storm was not in the print I saw last night. It was just one. Clearly it couldn't be as many as in the commercial since that would represent more Predators than were on the planet.

Definitely no Alien references...other than one line of dialog and maybe some music.

Anyway, it was a good time. LOVED the way it started, not so much the way it ended.

Another thing I liked about the ending was it didn't conclude with a huge explosion.

P1: Pred gauntlet.
P2: Pred ship taking off
AVP: Pred gaunt again...sigh.
AVPR: Military nukes town to contain aliens, sherrif's hair

So, it was a nice change to not have the heroes fleeing a massive explosion in the final minutes, says I.

Allosaur, you suggesting a xenomorph? :) I does look just like Ventura's plasma cannon damage, but it's cool to think there might be an Alien ref in this film, beyond the line of dialogue (and maybe a skull in the camp? Some claim to have seen one. I didn't).

yeah, that is played out for sure. I'm fine with ambiguity, but I didn't leave feeling immensely satisfied. As the movie faded to black I felt like "damn, I wish there was 30 more minutes" or even a double feature sequel. :)

The more I think about the timing of Topher's "reveal" (definitely wouldn't call it a twist), the more it irritates me because the timing REALLY detracted from the main thing that was going on... the final battle between Brody and the main Predator. To interject this ultimately meaningless Dr Jekyll/Mr Hyde moment at that point in the movie really hurt the flow and pacing of the final scenes. :thumbsdown

I too thought the "evil doctor" bit was a waste and detracted from the pace of the film.

And while I really liked this movie, I have many questions. Spoilers ahead.

Now, the planet they are on is a game preserve, but who's is it? Both predator species were there, do they both claim it? Does one species live there and the other just drops in for hunts?
It seems like this planet has been established for a long time, so both species should know that one or the other hunts there in which case isn't it kind of dumb for a lone member of one species go there by themselves when they are at war with one another?

And what is with the crashed ship Noeland is hiding in? Was this some other race that just got to close and the predators decided to bring it down and use the crew as game?

Did Noeland ever say who he was/why he was there? (I also thought his death was rather ignominious and down-played the fact he had survived for so long on his own).

meaningless is the right word. and I'm a bit bothered by his seemingly vast knowledge of alien flora. His one throwaway line "there are so many to choose from" sort of reinforces that it was just pretty much an Earth clone. nothing really alien about that planet. except the pretty sky.

Blown through by the predator's plasma cannon. Unless you think it's supposed to be something else.

I thought the same thing, but as I left the theater, my girlfriend said it looked to her that the chest was pushed out, not in. Pushed OUT. As in bursted.;) (her theory, not mine. I didn't notice it, so I have no thoughts on it.)

They'll have worked an Alien reference in somehow, trust me. I half expected to see a xenomorph skull when the camera panned around the various hunting trophies at the camp.

Blaines chest was burst out as well, as he was shot in the back.

So funny - because I too have always intertwined Commando and Predator. To the point where I sometimes forget which film has "Dutch" as the primary character.

And yes - Predator absolutely succeeds where it easily could have failed. Have you ever seen the outtakes for the efects shots showing the original design of the predator character? It is represented in all-red (for the effects process), and is just SILLY looking. The Winston design came in later in the game, and really saved their...

What, no love for Van Damme?!

Personally I like the idea that the guy they found was the host for a xeno. It would have made a nice subtle nod.

There's one thing I never got about the Predators (in any of the films) in general.

Wouldn't killing prey while invisible and/or killing them from behind be viewed as dishonorable?

I never liked the idea of Predator honor in not killing something that doesn't have a weapon. Same for the Borg and their "We won't attack a group who's species that we are trying to assimilate even if they walk by us with weapons". I mean, just drop your guns!

I was very happy when the Berserker Predator just outright stabbed that doctor character in the back the moment he saw him even though he was unarmed. And wasn't he going to shoot the than unarmed Royce before that death row convict got the jump on him?

Here's something that I kept waiting to be addressed, but wasn't. The plant life on the planet. Of course, unless you're going to create a completely digital world ala Avatar, or if you have a budget of half a billion, you're going to have to use Earth plants for your jungle scenes. Just no practical way around it. Normally, everyone just ignores the fact that they're on an alien planet surrounded by furns and palm trees. However, in this movie, the "doctor" recognizes a deadly plant. So obviously it must have come from earth. No one stopped to wonder what it was doing there? Did the predators "seed" the planet long ago with earth flora?

On a related note...did anywhere else get tired of every planet in the Stargate universe having gates sitting in pine forests? :lol

I went to the bathroom when Fishburne went to sleep. When I came back, everyone was freaking out about smoke and Fishburne was fanning a fire. What happened?

His character was trying to suffocate them via the smoke. Too many mouths to feed.

I wondered about the plants too.

You didn't get a good look at it, but didn't the creature from the cage that was chasing Doc look a bit like that guy above?
