Where does one find a gold bar (real or replica)?

So, my wife and I were watching the new show Royal Pains the other day and in the first episode the guy gets a bar of gold. I was just curious, where does one get a gold bar? Or even a replica gold bar? I'm not looking to invest in gold, just think it would be cool to have a gold bar (albeit a small one, like an ounce bar) or even a replica one. Hell, even a silver one would be pretty cool.

I own a silver bar and a gold bar.

My grandfather was a manager at this platting company that dealt with a lot of gold and silver. Basically, I got them after he died in his will.

Depends how badly you want it, but you can check platting companies or a bank i would guess.

yeah I saw this site. Any idea if it's legit?

I dunno. For some reason I think walking into a bank and asking for a gold bar might get me laughed at. :lol

Well, it wouldn't hurt to ask. When you cash your next check, and the teller asks you how you want it. Just say, "gold bars please".

Ummm... I believe an ounce of gold is only like 1.6 cubic centimeters... so it wouldn't look as impressive as you may think it will and will cost you ton of money since gold has gone up so much. The only thing it's good for is an investment. Otherwise I'd go with a replica.

Yeah. A gold bar is actually kind of small. If you want what you see in the movies, you have to find a gold brick. They can be found, but it's rare since no one really trades that much gold in such large units, except maybe banks and governments. It will cost you too, quite a bit. If you have that much disposable income, by all means go and find one. Otherwise, it's a lot of money for something that will just sit there and will not be as easily traded as the smaller bars.

Plus a gold brick weighs a TON ! (well, not actually a ton, but they're heavy)

You can't just toss them around like they do in the movies.

I bought a replica Soviet gold bar on Ebay a couple of years ago. Pretty cool when displayed under a light.

I know bricks come in different weights. I think the most common is just over a pound. The ones in movies look bigger than that, maybe at least five pounds? Probably more. Which would be at least close to $90,000 minimum. That would be one expensive prop.

I don't know where you get you info, but a standard US gold bar is 178mm x 92mm x 44.5mm or 7" x 3.625" x 1.750" and weighs 400 ounces or 27.5 pounds. Gold is nearly twice the density (weight) of lead. At current market value that would be $378,000 or 258,000 euro

I've been pondering a project like this: Vac metalized resin, or in my case a vac-formed bar with glued on base. Can't manage anything as intricate as the Balinese dancer, but simple stamps are do-able.

Sound interesting. Keep me posted! The best I could hope to do is some resin bars w/ gold spray paint. :lol
