I know it'll be some time before we hear anything, one way or another, on whether or not WB will continue the Nolanverse with John Blake in the role of Batman (unlikely) or Nightwing (far more likely, IMHO).
Since it seems both Bale and Nolan are out for any future Batman films, does Blake become the new Batman and WB runs with Joseph Gordon-Levitt and a new director? I don't see it. First, it complicates the Batman mythology for the more casual fan for whom Batman is always Bruce Wayne. Second, it would undercut the legacy of Batman's ostensible self-sacrifice to save Gotham.
Does JGL come back as Robin? I don't see that either. I think JGL basically already was Robin (i.e., in addition to the first-name thing, he also played the "Robin" role of sidekick) in TDKR; we just didn't know it until the end. Plus, a brightly-colored superhero who uses his legal first name just doesn't fit in this universe.
I think it much more likely he comes back (if he comes back at all) as Nightwing. Batman's legacy isn't diluted by a young lesser-trained replacement, and there's much more wiggle-room with the mythology, since the masses aren't nearly as familiar with Nightwing's backstory.
But that last fact then makes me wonder if WB wants to hang its hat on a Nightwing movie, given that audiences aren't super-familiar with the character, when they could dump resources into a Batman reboot instead. I dare say a new Batman movie would sell more tickets and more merchandising than a Nightwing film.
But then I wonder if WB will be shooting for a "DC Universe" string of movies similar to how Marvel's been doing it for the last few years, even with second-tier characters. Could a new Batman movie and a Nightwing movie co-exist?
Or could WB have no plans whatsoever for the character?
Verrrrry interested in seeing how this pans out......
