What kind of primer do you use?

So I've been trying to work on my painting techniques, and I've been practicing on these new TMN
T toys that just got released. The idea was to paint them all white then get some black inside all the grooves.
So I tried using a 'thinner' primer, I bought the 'skull white' primer from a Games Workshop. It's that special primer used to paint miniatures. I figured it would cover but without losing detail. It worked in that I didn't lose detail, but it didn't cover the whole thing thick enough to prevent the colour from bleeding through.
So I went on it afterwards with another kind of plastic paint, Krylon,
That covered nicely but now the figure is a bit sticky. So my question is this, what kind of primer do you use? ImageUploadedByTapatalk1374216744.776460.jpg

Depends on what I'm painting,

For figures I use Games Workshop Chaos Black for a primer, just don't paint the base coat to the edge and you are left with fine black in the edge. For large surface kits I usually use Tamiya Fine Surface Spray, but the spraycans can get a bit pricey, For small compact areas I use Vallejo Grey Surface Primer which I run through my airbrush. Hopefully this thread will also help me find a cheaper alternative to Tamiya.

Hope this helps.

Alclad grey primer, its good to go straight from the bottle and just a cup of an airbrush covers quite a lot of the models I use it on.prob with rattle cans is they can tend to put a too thick layer on the model/part and stuff like halfords brand can do what you describe and tends to be sticky and gooey.

Thats why tamiya if I was to use a rattler but I use alclad grey primer, its a light grey and it covers, sticks and dries nice.
:)

Tamiya makes the best paint, hands down. Alclad is about as good too. Tamiya/Alclad paint only on my models. Testors is crap, or at least, less forgiving and prone to orange peel.

I've tried a LOT of different primers in an attempt to find a cheaper alternative to Tamiya. I've yet to find one that delivers the same high quality results. Sometimes you get what you pay for.

The walmart brand. Which oddly enough works better then most paints. I use the gray primer for paint on projects as you can't beat it and i bought up the last of the red when the store was getting rid of it. I also have used the True Value brand yellow primer as paint. They rarely run and they stick way better than most of the rattle can paints i've used. I do once in a while get orange peeling though so i guess that's just a universal pain no matter what. I've also used krylon primer and rustoleum which i hate with a passion (the entire line not just primer).
