What Is It About The Predator...?

Some of us seem to not realize that the Pred was supposed to be a BAD guy. :(

Apparently I'm quite a bit older than most of us, because I was already 26 when P1 came out in 1987, and being a sci-fi fan from birth, I hadda see it.

The immediate things I liked about it were that the FX were, for the time, absolutely wonderful (now of course with modern CGI they look kind of crude, but back then nothing like the "cloaking effect", for instance, had been seen before). The other immediate thing I liked was the whole appearance of the Pred--the fluourescent-blood and the four-mandibles thing was something never seen before, and as a biology fan it really struck a chord with me (I immediately knew that whoever designed it was familiar with arachnids). And unlike "Star Wars", where the cantina denizens were, sadly, obviously rubber masks, the Pred looked incredibly realistic, one of the first really believable aliens seen on film (better even than Alien, which in the original film was barely seen at all).

The deeper thing I liked about it, though, was philosophical. Most sci-fi (particularly in the early 80's--the time of "Close Encounters" and "ET") was all lovey-dovey, as the nice aliens came down from Heaven and taught us how to be better people. When the tv-movie "V" came out, it said, instead, "what if the aliens come down here and they want to EAT us instead?" And P1 followed the same line--in "Predator", humans are not the terribly important and superior creatures we like to imagine ourselves as, and the rest of the universe did NOT lovey-dovey us. Instead, the Pred hunted us just like we hunt rabbits. We weren't Number One.

THAT was a very profound message back in the Reagan Era.

I'm not really the only one here who actually saw P1 in the movie theater (three times) back in 1987, am I . . . . ?

Wow, I am an old fart. :(

i first saw it on video when i was a kid, i just loved the idea of it, the hunter coming to earth to hunt us, the design was just so brilliant and original, it really struck a cord with me, i can remember trying to sculpt the head out of plasticene for days afterwards, trying to get the look right.
It was and still is one of the best 80's movies i ever saw.
I'm glad it was done, and that we are here in this board to keep the memory of stan and kevin and others who have passed alive.

Personally, what has always intrigued me about the Predator as a character is what his overall design "suggests" about life and evolution, including that of the human race.

(snip)

These are the basic skills of survival, and yet many of us who have grown up surrounded by modern convenience lack even these simple abilities.

I think the Predator, by his appearance, his design, and by what he does, suggests the very intriguing idea of an alien race which evolved to a point of such technological advancement that they eventually recognized that it had become their weakness. What would be the outcome if such a highly intelligent race of beings were to consciously and deliberately revert back to a "primitive" pattern of cultural practice?

The Predator race has mastered space travel...and yet what do they do? They travel millions of light years across the cosmos...and run around in the jungle in a loin cloth like an aborigine, pitting themselves against the deadliest creatures in the galaxy. The Predator's design suggests a being that lives for that self-affirmation that only a test of survival can provide. Sure, they still use their technology, but a Predator's preferred weapon is the knife and spear.

Honor and glory among the human race in the modern day is defined by money. A morally bankrupt man of limited resource can lie, cheat and swindle his way into wealth, power, and social status.

But honor and glory among the Predator race is defined by one's personal cultivation, strength and skill harnessed through years of discipline, training, and relentless tests of one's courage and resourcefulness.

There's an honesty abut that idea that I've always found very appealing.

I think the Predator, as a fictional character, raises some very valid questions about mankind as a species, and that's good science fiction.

I know this post is two years old and this Hunter might not even be here anymore, but this is a VERY VERY perceptive comment.

Particularly if we recall that P1 was made in the very middle of the Reagan Revolution, in which our society wholeheartedly embraced a technological arms race that threatened the entire planet's existence, and at the same time worshipped the "greed is good" ethos that eventually gave us our worst economic disaster in 75 years.

Like all good sci-fi, P1 was a criticism of our own selves.

This moment changed my life

I have to agree with Kit. This movie and that scene has forever made me a pred-head.

The look, the cockyness, the honor, the pride, the patience, the skill, the will, and the hunt. This is how I want to live my life.

Topic merged with existing topic - just took me a while to find it :D

Awesome, thanks predatrhuntr. I was looking for my topic and was confused as to where it had gone but noticed this one. Thanks again, it's great reading what sparked people's interests in this movie.

Since I'm a girl and part of the under 20 crew here, I get asked often why I'm into the Predator franchise. I've always been into sci fi, and balancing that with my activities like cheer/gymnastics has been difficult... There's not really an outlet out there for someone who is a cheerleader who is into this genre of movies... Which is why I love the Lair. =] What really caught my attention was how the Predator was such a skilled hunter with advanced fighting skills/technology, yet had a sense of honor; he wasn't a bully and he didn't take advantage of people/situations. The first Predator movie I saw was P2, so the part when he didn't kill the pregnant cop really spoke to me. Plus I think the idea of a 7'+ tall alien hunter coming to earth to kill humans is kinda cool. :D

girls, don't like predators, they're big and scary!

i was just being funny, i'm aware that there are some cool girls out there that dig predator. every dumb blonde girl i make sit down and watch are always like "this is scary" in that cheerleader voice and then they get bored, lol.
