Klean klay is an unusual clay that is water-soluable, yet has an oily consistency and generally won't dry out. Most anything, including water, should be fine.

I've used klean klay on several occasions but I don't everything about it so hopefully someone else chimes in too...

I certainly wouldn't use water to thin it out. To tell you the truth, I don't really know why I wouldn't, but since Klean Klay is an oil-based clay, I don't think water would do you any good.

EDIT: I just noticed Ghost Host's comment, so never mind what I wrote...

Things I've used to successfully thin it/make it smooth are: rubbing alcohol (you can either brush or wipe it on), mineral spirits (same application as the rubbing alcohol) - if you can't find mineral spirits, you could use turpentine but be careful since it's very toxic; heat, like from a heat gun. Don't go throwing it in the oven or anything. Again, since Klean Klay is oil-based, it could ignite if it gets hot enough.

I feel your pain when it comes to trying to get a sculpt perfectly smooth; I've been working on a clonetrooper helmet on and off for years now - I'm so jealous of the skill people like DAVIDYR1 have.

Guess what I was working on the head and the rod holding it up/armature went right threw.I put some tin foil to support it up hopefully this doesnt happen again.

i usually use 99% isopropyl (rubbing) alcohol, works great, evaporates quickly......you can probably get 91% or 70% at any drug store, should work fine
