I second that Elmer's Wood Putty suggestion.
I'm new to this kind of stuff, but on my last project, I used off-brand Bondo and epoxy putty for the most part. The filler is a big production, with having to set up shop outside, get the mask on, mixing, yadda yadda. The epoxy putty is a little easier, but its not good for broad flat spaces.
Now at the end, I have some small spots I need filled. My mom had some of this Elmer's stuff laying around, and wow. For small stuff, it goes on easy, dries fast, and sands much easier than the putty or bondo.
For big stuff, I'll use the wannabe-Bondo, but for little annoying cracks and dents, that Elmer's stuff is pretty good.
