I've only ever been an occasional gamer, and never owned a console that wasn't an obsolete artifact someone donated (someone just gave me a PS2!), but...
1. Pitfall (Atari)
2. Super Mario Bros (NES)
3. Blackthorne (SNES) I now see that it was kind of repetitive, but it had some of the first game violence I was exposed to, which was a hoot, and as a novice gamer it was easy enough for me not to get to mad at but challenging enough that it was fun.
4. Sonic the Hedgehog (Genesis)
5. The Jungle Book (Genesis) I have such good memories of me and my sister trying to figure out how to beat King Louie!
6. Dark Forces (PC). In 1996, I think it was, my buddy down the hall had the only really good computer in our whole dorm at my small college, and we'd huddle down there playing this, as well as number 7, for hours. Good times.
7. Rebel Assault. What a blast I had with that one. Again, as an occasional gamer, I was able to enjoy it without getting so frustrated I thought I'd break things.
8. Street Fighter ex plus Alpha (PS1) My brother gave me his PS and this game maybe eight years ago, and not really being a gamer I brought it into my classroom for my students to play at lunch. Little did I know that I began a tradition of challenging students and other teachers that would continue to this day. When that PS broke, when controllers broke, students brought in their old gear just so we could continue our Street Fighter duels. My best friend, a teacher down the hall, plays with me after school all the time, and for some reason it never gets old. When we've had a rough day, which is often, a little SF soothes us to no end, and we have great conversations as we now almost automatically go through our moves. It's pretty zen. In a fighting way. Yeah...
