Any progress on the bolter?
[/b]

Nothing dramatic to report. I've been tinkering with a few of the the details that I wasn't satisfied with just yet. I'm going to pick up a couple gallons of silicone to make molds today. I'll be posting pics as soon as I have a good looking casting painted up. Then I'll put up a new junkyard thread in case anybody else wants one.

Stay tuned.

what are the finished bolters going to be made of? oh and could you send me information about the materials you used to cast the buckets? and what clay did you use to sculpt it? can you guess what im building yet? lol.

The finished bolters are going to be hollow resin castings with glassfiber reinforcement just like the helmets. Some of the detail pieces are going to be cold cast bronze.

The clay that I used in sculpting the helmet was Monster Maker's oil based clay. You can get it at www.monstermakers.com.

I'm not sure what you're building. Is it a replica of the giant tomato from Attack of the Killer Tomatoes? If so, kudos to you. Nobody's ever done that before.

ooh ooh ooh
If it's the tomato i totally want one.

Seriously though, you think you are going to tackle the armor?

The armor I'm going to try soon, but only because I want a suit for me. I plan on sporting it for Halloween 2008. For now I'm trying to finish the bolter project. On that subject, here's a progress update.

It turns out the mold for the main portion is working. Here's the first casting coming out of the mold:

Here's some of the cold cast bronze parts:

And here's a shot of the two that I've pulled as of last night:

I've run out of silicone again and I still need to finish building the mold for the magazine. With that in mind, someone please check out my junkyard thread and preorder one of these to help me pay for more blue sticky goo. If all goes according to plan, I should be shipping these by the end of next week.

holy crap. I want mine so bad now.....

I wish I could afford 2 to help with the mold......

Hell, my wife is going to kick my butt when this one shows up.....

Can you post a new pic of you holding it for scale?

How's this?

This isn't me but rather my little sister who showed up at the shop at about the same time as I started taking pictures. In this shot you can see my rendering of the Imperial double eagle on the side of the housing. This will be one of three trim options that I've made so far. The others are plain skulls:

And the winged skulls previously pictured:

I'm making the second half of the mold for the magazine today and then I'm out of town with the scouts for the weekend. I should be able to start casting magazines on Sunday or Monday. Then I'll be able to get back to this mess:

Stay tuned...

Jealous rage...rising....must defy wife...risk marriage...possess bolter...

Fear of wife...quelling jealous rage...quiet yearning replacing rage...sweet talk wife...might work...

I actually scaled it down a bit to fit in with a suit that I can wear. The original version that I drew up and printed in lifesize was actually longer than my USCM M41 pulse rifle replica. It would have cost nearly twice as much to mold and eve the hollow castings would've taken a full gallon of resin. It's still huge (note how large the grip is in her hand), but not quite lifesize.

I saw those at DC. I was at the Hyatt bar and was thinking "what is that pink pig thing?" (he had the helmet off so I couldn't see the whole suit.

I thought they were top notch for a costume.

You're thinking of the 3 guys that did suits out of CNC'd white foam:

The one in Draven's post is one of GW's fiberglass shell marines they made for Games Day a few years ago and then farmed out to all their retail stores.

Someone just sent me this interesting picture of a vac-formed MkVII helmet. Does anybody know anything about these?
