Walking Dead Sheriff Uniform

The case of the mysterious pistol

As I mentioned previously, some people say Rick carries a pistol with a 6-inch barrel, while others say the barrel is 8 inches. For comparison's sake, I've thrown together three photos: a decent profile of Rick's pistol (although the tip of the barrel is pointing away from the camera ever so slightly), a profile of a 6-inch Python, and a profile of an 8-inch Python. The result? I'm more confused than ever. Note that Rick's pistol is clearly longer than the 6-inch in my photo, but appears shorter than the 8-inch. Also, Rick's pistol has three slotted out openings above the barrel (under the rail that the front sight sits on), which corresponds to the 6-inch model and not the 8-inch model. I tried to find an 8-inch model that has just three slots and couldn't...but, there's no question that the pistol Rick is holding in the photo is longer than the 6-inch pistol below it. I'm woefully ignorant when it comes to revolvers, so I'm at a loss to explain what I'm seeing.
To further bring out the differences in the sizes of the 6-inch vs. what Rick is holding, I've flipped the 6-inch and lined it up with key locations on Rick's pistol. Things wouldn't line up perfectly because, as I mentioned, Rick's barrel is pointing slightly away from the camera. But, that should have the effect of shortening the barrel's appearance...and it is still longer than the 6-inch.

Thanks. I used your photo for a comparison against the 6-inch barrel, too. Even allowing for the certainty that I'm not scaling the photos perfectly (all I have is Paint to work with) it reinforces the appearance that Rick's barrel is longer than 6 inches.

Then again...if I had the ability to tip Rick's gun up so it's level, the difference in barrel length might not seem as great. But, I still can't explain the photo I orginally compared with the 6-inch barrel. Could they have manipulated that photo to make the gun appear longer? I wonder.

I'm fairly certain it's a 6" Colt Python... I've never even come across anyone saying that it's anything else...

It looks like both images could have been subtly stretched wider. That could be an effect of the post processing or filming in widescreen format. I dunno. But going by the notches at the top of the barrel, it's definitely the 6" variant. Another thing to consider, it's probably not a real Python and is a stunt/blank firing version of the same which likely has slightly different dimensions.

I freaked out last night guys cause I found a swivel gun holster in the right basketweave on Ebay. I actually found a bunch for about 20 -30$

And then I realized they were for lefties... All of them. Sad panda.

Anyway! I also got a few shots back last night of my costume at Dragon*Con. Not completely finished, but I didn't want to miss the chance to shoot Rick in Atlanta. Especially on top of a building :D

I've only seen it said in one place:The Weapons of The Walking Dead: .357 Magnum |

It's looking more and more like he's wrong and some of the photos (intentionally or not) have stretched the pistol.

Interesting site. Is it for an RPG or something?

I don't believe the .357 magnum was ever a "standard" police round, and the Colt Python was never issued widely... it was a lot more expensive than, say, a S&W Model 66, which was widely used. If memory serves, the .357 magnum load was used in some agencies, but the .38 Special was far, far more common. Until the switch to semi-autos started in the eighties...

Avianna,

Great costume! I like the shadow pic!

I got my hat in finally. Its a great alternative to the stetson roper hat.

That's a good looking hat! Mind if I ask what kind it is and where you got it? I've got a roper on backorder, but I might have to go a different way if the order looks like it will take too long.

Thanks! Its made by Bailey hats. Chocolate brown cattleman style. Really good alternative and not too flared, no grommet removing either.

Aargh. Got my Sam Browne duty belt today and I ordered the wrong size. That's the downside of online shopping. Ah well, I'll return or resell it (anyone need a size 34?). Now that I have it, though, I have a better idea of what size to order (a 40! I wasn't even close! :facepalm).

But, this raises a question for the uniform belt (the one holding Rick's pants up). Do we know what color, make, and model that is?

Yeah. Tip to the newcomers, duty belts come small its basically the length from end to end so dont get pant size. I learned this on the job once. Also uniform pants are snug and usually have an inner rubber element to keep shirts from coming untucked.

Yeah, that's my next concern: the pants. I have a feeling they'll be tight, and since they're customized, I can't return them. But, they're fairly inexpensive, so if they are too small I'll just order bigger ones and try to resell the pants. Somewhere, a thinner guy than me is about to get a belt and pants on the cheap. lol

Inner belts, when one wears the kind without a velcro backing like Rick uses, are usually just a plain leather affair with a silver or gold belt buckle, depending on the color of the metal on the sam browne. It'll have a basket-weave pattern (or not) to match the outer belt. Anyplace that sells the outer belt will also sell you an inner belt... the inner belt should be the size you actually need to hold you pants up, the outer should be the next size up, unless it's specifically made to go over your inner belt, as some are...

Though, unless you keep your outer belt really lose, no one will see your inner belt, so it really doesn't matter.

Then again, Rick keeps his fairly lose, and also doesn't use but one keeper to hold it up, so I guess you do want to match it...

It's best if you go to your local uniform shop and just try them on. Check the yellow pages, or ask a member of your local law enforcement agency where they buy their gear...

Hi all new to the forums here, and to cosplay; although i have always wanted to do it. but i am in the midst of planning a Rick Grimes outfit and i have found the shirt and pants at an local army navy store, and the cowboy hat also at a local 'western wear' kinda store. but i am running into difficulties on the Colt Python. i dont really want to spend a lot of money one(right now) so i am just either looking for a toy (plastic, cap gun, etc) or a cheaper airsoft style gun. any help would be greatly appreciated. i loved looking through this thread at every ones pics.

P.S. if any one knows of any good Conventions in the South Dakota, Sioux Falls area I would love to know of them! thanks!

There's a link to an airsoft version that worked perfectly, once I "fixed" the orange muzzle, earlier in this thread.

Also, your post made me think that you wanted to use a real Python, but you'd settle for an imitation? Apologies if I'm mistaken... but please, don't ever use a real firearm with a costume! Even if open carry is legal where you are, it's just a bad idea... if for no other reason than the photo ops people will want with you!

I tried going through looking for the link but couldnt find it, i was just quickly browsing but must have missed it. and no im not looking for a real Python, but i feel like if im accurate on any part of the outfit it should be the gun. so a close to real looking fake gun would be best.

It looks great, aside from the grips, which don't seem to be removable. Think I had a pic or two of mine some pages back, along with my belt...
