Hi every one I have been debating on what costume to make and recently got some venom comics so I desided I wanted to sculpt a veom costume first question I would like to ask is what is the best clay to use I want something that can be spread over a few days I heard about oil based clay and Walt clay but not sure which one to go for
I am planning on posting pictures of venom in the next few days so you guys can see what references I'm using
Thanks

nice stoked to see another venom . i used " Monster maker " clay for the head sculpt great stuff holds alot of detail and perfect for sessions so you can go back to it it doesnt dry out or sag. for a venom head id suggest getting closer to 10lbs of it , to build up , unless you are doing a small head.ive reused it as well and no problems as long as its clean.
when you done ialso suggest before casting you use krylon acrylic clear spray to seal it and it also helps as mold release.

cheers and good luck look forward to seeing it

people have differnt preferances but i worked hard on my sculpt and i wanted copies. i used a brush on rubber mold from smooth on then backed it with plaster bandage mother mold. worked great got a great pull from it . i used a little more than recommended(3/8 inch think at final layer is standard) 5/8 inch but ill get more copies that will mantain higer quality.
i cast in flex foam also from smooth on flexfoam III and its very flexible and tough. you can back it (with first layer before foam ) with latex so the latex(slush molding) pick up detail and makes it tough . i lie to paint the foam directly with tinted latex colors does the same but i find it allows for more of the foams natural elasticity to stay. fits like a glove and very soft and comfortable. im not an expert but just a few things i found while messin around with it for my carnage http://www.therpf.com/f78/carnage-costume-complete-202143/
and venom so far. http://www.therpf.com/f78/venom-costume-build-202626/

one thing i will mention with foam is that the rubber brush mold process on allows for undercuts but if you have any use a mold release agent . i didnt and payed for it so do yourself a favor and get one , the foam sticks to everything. do it in a well ventilated but temp contolled area as well safty first..lol

well hope that helps , if if gain any insights while doing this and im sure you will dont forget to pass it along..

thanks
its good to plan out the suit before you start sketches (no matter skill level) help mentally plan it out even if they are doodles and references pics. to get started you only need the silouette planned out some details are best left to come out as BoB ross would call happy accidents..lol
dont spend to much time planning give it a limit and start date...you could plan forever you will learn alot from process of doing

the body is just normal cushion or apolstry foam you get at any fabric store i use 1, and 2 inch foam and laminate or build up to an exaggerated siloutte of what i want then sculpt back..(same principle as the clay for the mask)..that foam for mask is different it is a chemical 2 part foam from smooth on products. i made the hulk head ( the body was a friends old couch..lol)with just average foam so if you dont have access to the smoothon you can stil go regular foam route just use thinner foam and build up. you can add detail with each level....the hulk head was made on a painters sock on a foam head from costume store. once foam carving is complete you can do a layer of veins which can be made with anything...foam noodle if you have it, shoe strings whatever..as long as it flexible, the foam noodling or foam piping is best i found.
after veins you do skin. a sheer stretchy fabric works best...i found this nice fabric in a bin have no clue what it is but works great. its textured with lines like that of muscle fibers and i use that to good effect for the illusion of muscle striations ( my pics suck but it looks and feels like skin)you can apply the fabric with sprau glue then pin before latexing. you can fold and shape fabric to create skin folds etc....about 2 layers of tinted base latex (acylic paint in latex) then i start painting. you have to use latex in the all the paint . i airbrush the final highlights without . the end result is a tough realistic lookig and feeling skin. im still working on my method but this is what i have so far as its working well.
heres my deviant art link theres some more making off pics there that may help mongrelman's deviantART gallery
and my youtube channel that has the vids all in one area that show process i used.

they should help get you moving..you will notice the sketches of costume vary from end product...they are just to get you going and give you focus the costume will reveal itself and often way better as you do it.

Thanks so much wasn't to sure if you made the body out of clay as well but now I know I will have to take a trip down to my local scrap yard to see if I can get some foam to practise with
Thanks
